Miscellaneous papers from the office of Longueville and Co. relating to the Wynnstay estate, 1885-1925. They include draft leases by George Culley, Commissioner of the Office of Woods and Forests, etc. acting for the Crown to Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams Wynn of gold and silver ores under the lessee’s lands after the discovery of gold in Merioneth, with supporting historical evidence, and correspondence mentioning the gold mine at Castell Carn Dochan, Llanuwchllyn, 1888-1891. The cases for opinion concern fishing rights in Llyn Lliw Bran, Llanuwchllyn; a proposed mortgage on part of the Wynnstay settled estate in Llanbryn-mair; the application of capital funds for further estate improvements under the Settled Land Acts; the appointment of a new trustee; and the entitlement of Lady Williams Wynn to enter and manage the estates, including letting the sporting, 1891-1897. The file also includes a schedule of Wynnstay family deeds, 1856-1904, compiled 1904; a counterpart agreement for shooting on Bwlchygroes Moor, 1919; and a wayleave to North Wales Power Company Limited for the installation of electricity lines and cables over Wynnstay land at Ruabon, with map, 1925. There are several plans: Bala and Ffestiniog Railway at Trawsfyfndd, tracing [?c. 1885]; and non-conformist chapels at Cefndwy-graig, Dolhendre, Pont Dolanog, Goshen, Llanerfyl, Wern, Llanbryn-mair, Sion, Llanwrin, Llanwrin village, Graig, Staylittle, Siloh, Pont Llogell, and Ffolt, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, numbered 1-10, dated 1885.

Probate records of several members of the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, comprising mainly copies, abstracts and transcripts of the wills of Sir John Wynn and Sir William Williams, 1710-1735; Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 1840-1876; Grenville Watkin Williams Wynn, 1865-1924; and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and Dowager Lady Williams Wynn, 1884-1905.

Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire deeds and documents

Conveyances, agreements, particulars, conditions of sale and other documents relating to the sale of parts of the Wynnstay estates in Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire, 1853-1921, and the estate timber, 1853[x1870]. The lands included the Maenan estate, 1856-1858, and part of the Cefn estate, sold for building development in Colwyn Bay and Llysfaen, 1891-1921.

Colwyn Bay and Llysfaen

Papers relating to the sale and lease by Captain Robert William Herbert Watkin Williams Wynn of land belonging to the Plas yn Cefn estate at Colwyn Bay and Llysfaen, Caernarfonshire, for building purposes and road construction, 1891-1921. The building sites are specified as the Cefn estate, Meriadog Road, Cadwgan Road, Llanelian Road, Wellington Road, Peulwys Road, Wyndcliffe in Abergele Road, Bodelwyddan Avenue, Berthglyd Road, Coed Coch Road, and Dr Leeming’s garage adjoining Mohrcroft garden. The builders were Robert Evans of Old Colwyn and Fred J. Tucker of Colwyn Bay. Purchasers and lessees include Old Colwyn Golf Club, David Ed. Evans, Black’s Advertising Agency and Conwy Rural District Council (easements for water supply). The documents include a charge for securing moneys advanced to the builder, 1891; building and loan accounts, 1900-1912; formal agreements, 1905-1912; specifications of properties, 1908-1910; letters to the land agent, Douglas MacNicoll, which include a proposal for the construction of a school, 1910-1914; notice to Robert Evans of rescission of contract, 1911; an insurance policy for the golf house, 1912; a list and plan of owners in Wellington Road; a valuation of land at Llannerch Road West, 1916; an agreement for a garden near Carlton; and plans of a portion of the Cefn building estate, and of some individual properties.

Mortgages

Mortgages and other papers relating to mortgages (mainly copies and drafts) on the Wynnstay estates in Salop, Montgomeryshire, Flintshire, Merioneth and Denbighshire, but also including a small number of family deeds, and documentary evidence of mortgages of the Peniarth estate for which the Williams Wynn family acted as trustees, 1770-1921. The Wynnstay securities comprised two very large mortgages of £77,000 and £60,000, respectively assigned to new mortgagees in 1845.

Wynnstay and Peniarth mortgages

Mortgages and related papers of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn [sixth Baronet] and of the Wynne family of Peniarth for whom he was a trustee, mainly 1845-1892. The file includes an assignment by the mortgagees of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn to Elizabeth Duchess Dowager of Cleveland of £60,000 secured on properties in the parishes of Wrexham, Gresford, Erbistock, Ruabon and Lansilin, Denbighshire, 1845, followed by an abstract dated 1872 of the reconveyance in 1859; an abstract of mortgage for £23,700 from Sir Watkin Williams Wynn of properties in Montgomeryshire, Merioneth, Denbighshire and Salop, 1853; a schedule of mortgages upon the estates of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn 1853; an abstract of release from the Bank of England to the trustees of William Wynne of Peniarth of part of his estates comprised in a mortgage, 1866; schedules of lands in the parishes of Llanbryn-mair, Llanrheader-ym-Mochnant and Llanfyllin, apparently comprised in a mortgage of William Robert Maurice Wynne, 1891, and of lands in Llanuwchllyn comprised in a security to Messrs Stone and Cunliffe, 1892; and a list of mortgages of Charles Henry Wynn, 1921.

Letters concerning West Wye Valley mine etc.

Letters mainly to Longueville and Co., and occasional copies of outgoing letters, 1858-1914 (mainly 1874-1914) concerning the lease of the West Wye Valley mine [Llangurig]; the sale by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn to Sir Edmund Buckley of Yspyddadog, Brynmelyn and Gelligron in the parish of Llanfor, Merioneth, with particulars and a timber valuation; the marriage settlement of Charles Henry Wynn of Rug and [Frances Georgiana] Romer, 1876; a new road in Ruthin from Well Street to Market Street; payments for telegraph poles in the parishes of Oswestry, Llansilin and Llanrhaeadr, and Llanwddyn; and negotiation with Col. Cornwallis West about disputed shooting rights over the Daldryn in the parish of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog. Correspondents include the Wynnstay agents Owen S. Wynne, Hugh R. Hughes, R.M. Thomas and Philip Godsal, John Williams of Gwernhefin, Bala, Ruthin Town Council, R. E. Birch of St Asaph, and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn.

Llangedwyn estate rents

The collection comprises property in p's Oswestry, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llandegla, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llansilin, co. Denb., Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant, co. Mont., Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint, and Tilston, Cheshire. The pre-1897 Llangedwyn estate rents (the estate of Lady Williams Wynn) are not contained in separate volumes as below, but, rather, with other estate rentals in the series of Farm and Cottage receiving rentals. After 1911 (RD29), the Llangedwyn rents re-appear in those rentals. Some additional properties are included in the Llangedwyn rentals from 1897 onwards as a result of the transfer of certain properties from the Wynnstay and Ruthin estate to the Llangedwyn estate. Llangedwyn rents will also be found in the series of general rentals (see Farm and cottage rents, 1863-1898). The Llangedwyn rentals are half-yearly, ending either at Lady Day or Michaelmas. Cynllaith Owain chief rents, consisting of property in t's Lloran and Priddbwll [p. Llansilin], co. Denb., are also included from 1898 (RD4). However, since these chief rents were collected yearly, at Michaelmas, they will only be found in the Michaelmas volumes. Details of Cynllaith Owain chief rents before 1898 will be found in the general rentals, and in the series of Tithe, chief and fee farm rentals.

Miscellaneous Wynnstay (Longueville) files

Files of unsorted papers from the office of Longueville and Co. relating to the Wynnstay estate, 1717-1909. Many of the papers concern purchases, sales and exchanges of property in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Montgomeryshire and Salop, mainly in the mid-nineteenth century. Typically they include draft deeds, abstracts, particulars, plans, valuations and conditions of sale. Some deeds relate to disentailment and the release of encumbrances on parts of the Wynnstay settled estates prior to sale, and to the right of the trustees to sell. Several documents concern the sale of Wynnstay land for railway development schemes and for water supply, such as the Vyrnwy water supply under the Liverpool Corporation Waterworks Act 1880. Several of the bundles contain papers of Watkin Edwards Wynne of Llewesog and of Owen Wynne, his brother and executor, 1785-1800. Other recurrent themes include the manorial rights of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in the manor of Cyfeiliog, the sale of timber from the Wynnstay estates, Wynnstay finances, and the work of the trustees for the purposes of the estate sales and purchases. Several files contain statements of conveyances of parts of the Wynnstay estates and trustees’ accounts, 1858-1860. Most files contain routine accounts and correspondence of Longueville and Co., of the Wynnstay agents and other interested parties.

Tanycoed, Rhandir Issa and Llangedwyn estate improvements

Papers deriving from an application by Lady Louise Alexandra Williams Wynn and the trustees of the will of the late Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, under the provisions of the Settled Land Acts 1882-1890, for a new farm house at Tanycoed in the parish of Llansilin, Denbighshire, a water supply for Rhandir Issa and Rhandir Ucha in Llanforda, Salop, and new Dutch barns for eleven farms on the Llangedwyn estate in the parishes of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llansilin and Oswestry, 1902-1905.

Rhandir Issa and Llangedwyn estate improvements

Papers deriving from an application by Lady Louise Alexandra Williams Wynn and the trustees of the will of the late Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, under the provisions of the Settled Land Acts 1882-1890, for a new farm house at Rhandir Issa (Isaf) in Llanforda, Oswestry, and new Dutch barns on nine farms belonging to the Llangedwyn estate in the parishes of Oswestry, Llangedwyn and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, 1903-1905. Settled Land Acts estate improvement applications

Papers relating to applications between 1887 and 1905 by Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams Wynn, Lady Louise Alexandra Williams Wynn and the trustees of the Wynnstay settlement of 1884, under the provisions of the Settled Land Acts, 1882-1890, for improvements on the Glan-llyn estate in the parish of Llanuwchllyn, Merioneth, Llwynymaen and Llanforda near Oswestry, Salop, the Llangedwyn estate in Llansilin, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Denbighshire, the Llanbryn-mair and Cyfeiliog estate, Montgomeryshire, and parts of the main Wynnstay estate in Bangor Is-coed and Wrexham. Typically the file contents comprise official application forms for the approval by the Board of Agriculture of a surveyor or engineer nominated by the Wynnstay trustees, orders issued by the High Court of Justice Chancery Division, building estimates, specifications, surveyors’ reports and certificates, accounts, agents’ receipts and relevant correspondence. Some files contain plans and elevations.

Papers relating to Wynnstay lawsuits

Papers from the office of Longueville and Co., drawn up in the preparation of lawsuits mainly involving members of the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, [c. 1817]-1904. The most substantial of these is a case brought by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn against Robert Edwards of Gronwen, Oswestry, and Thomas Roberts, concerning trespass and a dispute over land at Moelfre Pool in the manor of Cynllaith Owain, 1883-1884. Others include an alleged case of trepass by Richard Tyrwhitt on lands in Llansanffraid Glynceiriog and Llandysilio, Denbighshire, [c. 1817]-1820; the recovery of royalties from William Farr of Plas Llysyn, Montgomeryshire, 1833-1839; possession of a cottage at Commins Coch, Cemais, Montgomeryshire, 1873-1878; and several separate cases relating to tenancy and arrears of rent, 1874-1904. The files typically include cases and counsels’ opinions, notices, the complaint or statement of claim, court summons, affidavits, court orders, attorneys’ bills of costs, correspondence, counterparts and copies of relevant deeds, and maps and plans.

Lady Williams Wynn vs Edward Thomas

Papers in a lawsuit in the County Court of Shropshire by Lady Louise Alexandra Williams Wynn against Edwin Thomas of Sychgwin, later of 56 Upper Brook Street, Oswestry, for unpaid rent on a cottage, garden and lands in the township of Llanforda in the parish of Oswestry, Salop, 1899-1904. Includes the counterpart lease agreement to Edwin Thomas, 1897; and letters from James Stewart, the agent at Llangedwyn, 1901.
