1968-1997 Purchases and Donations (NLW MSS)

Papers, [c. 1893]-1988, of John Cowper Powys, some published posthumously, which include letters, both to John Cowper Powys and to his companion, Phyllis Playter, as well as drafts of works, both published and unpublished, diaries, lectures and essays. The correspondence includes over eight hundred love letters, 1921-1932, from John Cowper Powys to Phyllis Player; some six hundred and forty letters and cards, 1925 and 1935-1955, from Littleton Charles Powys to his brother, John Cowper Powys; some four hundred and fifty letters, 1942-1962, from John Cowper Powys and other members of his family to Gilbert Turner, and some three hundred and fifty letters, 1945-1969, from Turner to John Cowper Powys and Phyllis Player; and over two hundred letters, 1924-1967, from Alyse Gregory, widow of Llewelyn Powys, to Phyllis Playter.

Manuscripts

Papers of Raymond Garlick, 1944-2005, comprising poetry, 1951-1999; letters, 1944-2003, from Elwyn Davies, Jonah Jones, Brenda Chamberlain, Cledwyn Hughes, A. G. Prys-Jones and others; and diaries and travel journals, 1950, 1956-1957, 1987-1998, 2000-2001. The diaries contain frequent references to his family, including his children Iestyn and Angharad, and to friends such as John Cowper Powys, Jon Dressel, R. S. Thomas and Roland Mathias.

Dolaucothi correspondence (group V),

Supplementary papers: (i) V 1-21 are twenty one volumes of papers which were bound before coming to NLW. Their contents are described in order of appearance in the volumes. They consist largely of correspondence for the period 1688-1853, with a small number of other documents and a few items of later date. These, and other groups of Dolaucothi papers deposited at various dates from 1929 on, were converted into a donation by Major H. J. Lloyd-Johnes in 1980; (ii) V 22-26 were donated to NLW by Mrs Margaret Lloyd-Johnes in 1984. V 22 and V 23 were guarded and filed at NLW.

WPA election addresses and leaflets

The group consists of election addresses, leaflets, circulars and other miscellaneous items, 1905-2019, deriving from the Welsh constituencies and relating to parliamentary general elections, 1979-2019, parliamentary by-elections, 1966-2019, the elections to the European Parliament, 1979-2019, general elections to the National Assembly for Wales, 1999-2016, by-elections to the National Assembly for Wales, 2001-2018, and local (county and district) elections, 1952-2017. There are also files of election materials, 1905-1999, deriving from various localities and containing items from an array of different elections.

Political papers and records acquired by the WPA

The group consists of political records and papers, 1868-2019, namely records relating to the political parties in Wales, 1887-2019, and various pressure groups and organisations, 1949-2003, subject files, 1868-2019, miscellanea, 1930-2003, and Isle of Man elections 2011-2017.
