Administrative history

The British Broadcasting Corporation (more commonly known as the BBC), with its headquarters at Broadcasting House, Portland Square, London, was established by Royal Charter in 1927 with the authority to provide information, to educate and to entertain its audience across a wide range of areas including current affairs, arts and culture, education, religion and sport. Its predecessor, the British Broadcast Company, had obtained its licence to broadcast in 1923, and the public broadcast service in Wales began in the same year when a radio station was opened in Cardiff, providing programmes in both English and Welsh. The Welsh region of the BBC received its own wavelength for audio broadcasts in 1937 and its own separate wavelength for televisual broadcasts in 1964, since when it has been known as BBC Wales. Welsh language programmes were first broadcast on the television in 1953 and they have been scheduled every day since 1957; the Welsh language television channel is known as BBC Cymru. The English and Welsh radio stations (Radio Wales and Radio Cymru) have been separate entities since 1977. As a whole, the Welsh region of the BBC - comprising BBC Wales, BBC Cymru, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru - is also known as BBC Cymru Wales.

Archival history

All of the scripts in the 2019 Donation and about half of those in the 1960-1998 Deposits were retained by the BBC in Cardiff until they were transferred to NLW. Boxes 1-505 of the 1960-1998 Deposits - the first boxes to arrive at the Library - were held at the BBC Written Archives Centre in Caversham, Berkshire, before transfer, and the scripts in boxes 506-507 of the same group were held by private individuals before transfer.

As well as scripts, the 2019 Donation includes 172 boxes of BBC corporate records comprising: 115 boxes of 'Press and Publicity', 'Audience Research', 'Marketing and Events', 'Education', 'Teachers' notes (Radio)', 'Aberystwyth', 'Wales Document Archives' and 'Miscellaneous'; and 57 boxes of 'programmes as completed' and 'programmes as broadcast'. These are currently uncatalogued.

Approximately a thousand boxes of 'Producers' Files' were accessioned by the Library in 1999. Some 33 of these were returned to the BBC in 2001, and the remainder were de-accessioned in 2017-2018 and transferred to the BBC Written Archives Centre in Caversham, which holds many of the BBC's corporate records.

Many original scripts and copies of scripts for BBC programmes can be found among the papers of their authors, together with related notes, drafts and correspondence.

BBC photographs are kept in the Library's photographic collection.
