Letters to John Lewes and Edward Loveden Loveden

Correspondence mainly between John Lewes of Carmarthen, Edward Loveden Loveden of Buscot Park and John Adams of Peterwell, concerning Loveden’s purchase of part of the Peterwell estate, 1779-1784. The file also contains Evan Jenkins’ ‘account of the several lordships purchased of Mr Adams’, affidavits of John Hughes of Nantgwillan and Thomas Edwardes of Lampeter, and a valuation of the wood at Peterwell and Millfield. Other correpondents are J. Woolstenhulme, Thomas Williams of Lampeter, David Williams of Lampeter, Elizabeth Adams, Thomas and James Graham of Lincolns Inn, Anne Evans of Lowmead, Jacob Riddle of St Philip Leadhouse, John Hughes of Llwyn glas and ?James Hughes. Records of the Gogerddan estate, Cardiganshire, and the Pryse family, including branches of the family at Glanfred, Ynysgreigiog and Glanmerin,1238-1987. There are also records of various other families linked to Gogerddan by marriage: Loveden of Buscot Park, Berkshire, Lewes (or Lewis) of Llan-gors, Breconshire, and of Abernantbychan and Coedmor in Cardiganshire, Hean Castle in Pembrokeshire and Hurst in Berkshire and Wiltshire, Pughe of Mathafarn, Montgomeryshire, and via the Pughe family, Salesbury of Rug. Merionethshire. The main group of Gogerddan estate papers comprises rentals, 1719-1931; valuations, 1805-[early 20th cent.]; title deeds, 1332-1930; estate administration records which include agency and tenancy papers, 1810-1925, estate accounts, 1474-1926 (mainly 1850s-1926), building records, 1766-1921, agricultural records, 1796-1922, forestry and timber records, 1816-1923, papers relating to enclosures on Cors Fochno and elsewhere, 1743-1899, hunting, shooting and fishing records, 1804-1943, and household administration records, 1668-1928; estate and general correspondencec, 1586-1924; papers of various agricultural societies, 1815-1924; Cardiganshire lead mining records, 1656-1924; manorial records mainly from Genau’r-glyn, Cardiganshire, and Emlyn Iscych, Pembrokeshire, and a few from Lampeter, 1610-1919; legal papers, 1441-[post-1908]; mortgages and other financial papers, 1577-1926; papers relating to the Cardigan Borough elections and other political papers, [1690]-1880[; county administration papers from Cardiganshire and other counties, 1523-1929; records of institutions such as churches and chapels, schools and charities, 1620-1945; papers relating to roads and railways, 1776-1900; the Pryse family probate records and family settlements, 1549-1950; and personal papers of the family, including Lady Marjorie Pryse, 1641-1987. There are several sub-groups of records from the other estates. The first of these is Abernantbychan, 1416-1918, which includes rentals, 1722-1887and valuations, 1790-[c. 1881]. The other estates comprise Mathafarn, 1403-1754, Aberbechan and Main, 1238-1684, Rug, 1529-1744, and miscellaneous estates which include Peterwell and Nanteos, Cardiganshire, Llanboidy in Carmarthenshire and Montserrat, West Indies, 1562-[c.1887],The BRA deposit consisted of papers mainly from the offices of solicitors, Atwood and Hughes of Aberystwyth, and Boys and Tweedie of London. It included original Gogerddan deeds, together with maps, correspondence, papers relating to enclosures in the manor of Genau’r-glyn, sales and purchases of land, mining and court cases, and papers amassed during administration of the estate after the death of Pryse Loveden in 1855. The material in the BRA Deposit has been amalgamated with the main Gogerddan catalogue, albeit as discrete files for retrieval purposes.Overall, the collection reflects the historical importance of Gogerddan and the Pryse family within Cardiganshire. Several major themes emerge from the estate records: the history of property ownership and building development in the Aberystwyth area, estate work such as land drainage, building improvements, agriculture, forestry, mining, gamekeeping and foxhunting, county politics, and participation in large-scale commercial enterprises such as the railways. The personal papers illustrate the family’s interests and their deep concern over financial issues during the final decline of the Gogerddan estate.

Thomas Pryse and Edward Pryse

Family deeds and settlements of Thomas Pryse of Glanfread, Sir Thomas Pryse of Lodge Park, and Edward Pryse of Gogerddan, 1663-1696. They comprise a conveyance by Thomas Pryse the elder to his daughter Elizabeth of Tythin Dolglessing and Pwll yr Yscawen in Faenor, Llanbadarn Fawr, for her maintenance, 1663; a settlement by Sir Thomas Pryse on Dame Elizabeth, widow of Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, then wife of John Herbert, by order of a decree of the Court of Chancery, of parts of the Gogerddan estate in and near Aberystwyth, but excluding the mansion, 1677; a settlement by Vincent Corbett of Ynysmaengwyn and other trustees, for Edward Pryse in accordance with the will of Sir Thomas Pryse of Bodfage Park [Lodge Park, p. Llangynfelyn], following the death of his nephew and heir, Carbery Pryse, 1695; an agreement by Edward Pryse for the financial compensation of Hester Scawen of Llanbadarn Fawr and her daughters, upon renunciation of their interest in the personal estate of Sir Carbery Pryse, deceased, including annuities deriving from his shares in the mines of Bwlch Hir and Esgair Hir, 1695/6., and a declaration of trust by Nicholas Haywood of London to John Oldbury and Thomas Phipps, which may be relevant, 1695.

Llangynfelyn (Lodge Park or Parke Bodvage and Parke Newydd)

Title deeds of Lodge Park or Parke Bodvage, called Modvagedd or Motevage in the earlier documents, in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1569-1661. The first deed is a lease of Modvagedd by Phellippe Williams of Aberystwyth and his wife Elen Lewes, to their son, Richard Phellippe (Phillipps), stipulating suit of mill at at Melin y Coed, 1569. Other deeds comprise a mortgage by Richard Phillipps to John Stedman of Strata Florida, of Motevageth and a parcel of meadow called Parke Newydd, 1578; deeds by Richard Phillipps, his son Henry Phillips, and John Stedman, for the assignment and sale of both properties to Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1593-1595; and leases by Sir Richard Pryse to Thomas Bushell of Euston, 1636/7, and to William Sumner of Pollicott, Buckinghamshire., describing the park, fenced on one side with a stone wall, and on the other side with a hedge and ditch, together with a sheepwalk, 1661.

Llangynfelyn (Tynllwyn, Morfa Trwyn Buarth, etc.)

Two deeds by Sir Pryse Pryse and his trustees, relating to the sale and exchange of lands in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1881 and 1886. The other parties are Henry Sagar and Samuel Dewhurst of Salford, Lancashire, 1881, and Richard Joel of Rock House, Llangynfelyn, 1886. Named properties are Tynllwyn Farm and an allotment on Morfa Trwyn Buarth. Schedules and plan incorporated.

Llangynfelyn (Tre’r-ddol)

Lease by Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan, of houses recently erected at Tre’r-ddol in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1816, followed by an assignment, 1833; counterpart lease of land enclosed from the waste of the manor of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, called Craig y Penrhyn, near the village of Tre’rddol, 1829, and copy of an agreement for its lease by William Mathew Thomas to James Thomas of Glanclettwr, 1898.

Llangynfelyn (Penryn Madog and Parke Newydd)

Title deeds of a messuage called Penryn Madog and a close of land called Parke Newydd in Llannerch Goch, Llangynfelyn, 1557-1597. Penryn Madog is the subject of a settlement by Owen ap Gruffithe [ap Meredith ap Gruffri of Tre'r-ddôl] on Katherine verch John, 1557. Subsequent deeds relate to a mortgage of both properties by Owen ap Gruffithe ap Meredith ap Gruffri to Sir John Prise, clerk, 1566-1574; and quitclaims by Ellen verch John Lle'nn ap Morgan of Llangynfelyn, widow of John Prise, to David ap Llenn' Lloyd of Llandysul, 1576, and by Thomas Jones, brother of Rees Jones of Llangynfelyn, son of John ap Rees (Prise), to Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1597

Llangynfelyn (Gwyddynys)

Title deeds of houses and lands in the township of Gwyddynys in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1562-1659. Properties include half of Tyre Y Vron Goch, in a bond to lease by Ieuan ap Owen ap Mores, 1562; Penryn or Tythin Gweithe Ynys, acquired by John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1581; Tythen Llwyn Y Gyrne, mortgaged by Richard ap John ap Reedderch of Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn to John Pryse, 1581; and a moiety or half of Tythen y Neyadd in Gwddynys, acquired by Gruffith ap Ieuan ap Jenkin of Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn, 1585, and sold to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1609. There is also an account of lands of Gruffith ap Ieuan ap Jenkin sold at the time of Thomas Pryse’s marriage, 1592; and a bond by John Evans of Noyadd Gweddynys to Sir Richard Pryse, for performance of covenants, 1659.

Llangynfelyn (Llannerch Goch)

Title deeds for houses and lands in Llannerch Goch in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1546-1558. The main property is Y Tythyn Ucha yn y Llannerch Goch; there are deeds for purchases by Yeuan Gyttyn Dyo, 1546, and by Ieuan ap Gr' ap David, 1551/2; bonds and quitclaims by Rhydderch ap Ieuan ap Guttyn Deio and Rytherche ap Ieuan ap Gruff' ap D'd respectively, to John Vaughan ap Rudderch, 1557-1558; a gift by Thomas ap John ap Rudderch to Thomas D'd Gutto, which also includes Y Borth Nant, 1573; and a mortgage by Rignallt William of Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1622. The other properties are Tyddyn y Vron Goch, mentioned in a bond to John ap Riys of the commote of Genau'r-glyn, 1567; and Y Llyast Yn Yr Ddisgwylfa, assigned by George Jones of Rhos Gillan, mortgagee of Humphrey Harry, to Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1671.

Llangynfelyn (Ty yn y Ddole, Llain Galed and Tuy yn y Berth)

A bond to Yvan John Geffrey and Elliw verch David Vachan his wife concerning Tythyn Llayngaled, 1546; and a deed of sale by Henry Vaughan ap Richard ap John Vaughan ap Ridderch of Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn to Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, of Y Tuy yn y Ddole, together with Y Llain Galed, a void tenement called Tuy yn y Berth and other pieces of land (named), in Llangynfelyn and Llannerch Goch, 1597.

Llangynfelyn (misc. properties)

Title deeds of houses and lands in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1541-1760. Boundary clauses mention the bog and the river Clettwr. The earliest deeds record transactions of the Jankyn family, namely a gift by Jankyn ap Ieuan ap David, of Y Berth and Llain Bengam to Gr' ap Ho'll ap Ieuan Here, 1541; and purchases by Morgan Ll'n ap Jankyn of Y Garrack Selfock and other lands, [1547x1553]. Further deeds refer to Tir y Vron Goch, the water mill, Tythin Ynys Tyder in Llannerch Goch sold by John ap Rees ap John and Mawld his wife to Griffyth ap Ievan ap Jenkin, and Tythin Gwern Rees Taylour, 1574-1617; parties include Richard Phillipps of Aberystwyth and others. Properties acquired by the Pryse family include Lle Tuy D'd, Klwt y Maen Gwnion, Llyest y Wayn Bwll, a moiety of Y Neyadd and Tythen Y Neyadd, and Crosse Howse, purchased by John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1581; Tythin Allt Ieuan ap Eignion, purchased from Howell ap Jenkin ap Ieuan ap Dio and Henry ap Howell ap Jenkin by [Sir] Richard Pryse, 1596; Lle Llyest Ieuan ap Howell Benlloid in Blaen Clettwr and Melyn y Coyed, acquired by Sir Richard Pryse, 1605-1607; and Tuthin y Velin and Tuthin Ergid y Bwa, purchased by Dame Gwen Pryse, 1627. Later deeds comprise a bond to Richard John of Ynys Fochno, 1720; exemplification of a fine whereby Thomas Pryse gained a moiety of the mill and other, unspecified properties, 1727; and a lease by Richard Morgan of Henllys, of Tyddin Tynyrhelig and Lletty’rfran, 1760.

Llangynfelyn title deeds

Title deeds of houses and lands in the parish of Llangynfelyn, 1541-1898. The earliest file concerns miscellaneous properties, 1541-1760. The subsequent files contain deeds relating to Ty yn y Ddole, Llain Galed and Tuy yn y Berth, 1546-1597; Llannerch Goch, 1546-1671; Penryn Madog and [part of] Parke Newydd in Llannerch Goch, 1557-1597; Gwyddynys, 1562-1659; Lodge Park or Parke Bodvage and [another part of] Parke Newydd, 1569-1661; Tre’r-ddol, 1816-1898; and Tynllwyn Farm and Morfa Trwyn Buarth, etc., 1881-1886. The earlier files record acquisitions by John Pryse and Sir Richard Pryse in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Other names include the families of Jankyn or Jenkin, Phellippe or Phillips of Aberystwyth, Vaughan of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Guttyn or Gutto.

Penrhyn-coch church

Records of the church of St John the Divine, Penrhyn-coch, formerly part of the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, comprising a licence granted by the Bishop of St David’s for burials in the new churchyard, 1877; a faculty for appropriation of a portion of the burial ground for Pryse family graves, with copy, 1901; and an order of service for the dedication of the reredos and organ, 1921.

Gogerddan surveys and valuations

Surveys and valuations of lands, buildings and stock on parts of the Gogerddan estate, in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, sometimes with maps enclosed, 1766-1919. Some of the surveys include observations on the condition of the tenements and allowances by the landlord for improvements. The names of several of the surveyors are given and the bills for their services are included.

Montserrat, West Indies

Title deeds found with the Gogerddan estate records, relating to a plantation in the parish of St Anthony, Montserrat, in the West Indies, 1694/5-1698. The location would suggest a link with Carbery Pryse, who went to Barbados in 1666, although the documents post-date his death. The deeds record a mortgage by John Scott and William Frye, on behalf of Joseph Collins of St Davids, Jamaica,, 1695, a reconveyance by the mortgagee, Edward Parson, 1697, and the sale of the plantation by Joseph Collins,and Johana his wife to William Frye of Montserrat, 1698. The tenant was Major Thomas Lee.

Worcestershire

Blank nineteenth century lease agreement for property in Worcestershire, with an annotation on the notice required for termination of the lease.

Salop

Counterpart lease by Edward Earl of Powis and John Probert of Copthorn, Salop, devisees of George Edward Henry Arthur, late Earl of Powis, to Robert Roberts of Llwyntidman, of a piece of land allotted out of the commons of Llwyntidman in the parish of Llanymynech and manor of Duparts, Salop, 1814.

Lancashire

Leases by Edmund Prestwyche of Hulme, Lancashire, Thomas Prestwich and his mother Margarett, of messuages and lands at Count Hill, Hallowes Heye, the Grete Fulwoode and the Hoebanke, Kilne Hill, the Ould Ground and the Little Moore, situated in Sholver in the township and parish of Oldham 1600-1652; tenants include members of the Cocker, Hallowes and Kershawe families
