Exhibition catalogues

The file comprises exhibition catalogues in which David Jones is listed, namely 'Welsh Painting Last Sixty Years', London, 1947; 'Exposition internationale de la Gravure contemporaine', Paris [c. 1949]; Redfern Gallery Exhibition of contemporary British paintings, 1953; David Jones' Arts Council exhibition at Edinburgh, 1954; and 'Artists of fame and of promise', Leicester, 1956; with a catalogue of a New York exhibition of manuscripts when David Jones was a recipient of the Loines award for The Anathemata, 1954. The file comprises mainly manuscript lists of pictures by David Jones, including lists of pictures in chronological order, lists of drawings delivered to and remaining with the Redfern Gallery in 1940, list of photographs, lists of colour and black and white reproductions for The Penguin Modern Painters. David Jones by Robin Ironside, 1949. Also included is an explanation of the 'Cara wallia derelicta' inscription, a draft list of David Jones' beneficiaries, a proof copy of an engraving of an unicorn, some doodles, and lettering of 'sicut in medio compaginis...' .

Lists of pictures

The file comprises lists of paintings, drawings and engravings by David Jones, including a list of 'Deluge 1-10' and 'Ancient mariner 1-8', manuscript and typescript lists of pictures with dates and names of the owners prepared for an exhibition, numerous lists (dated January-November 1940) of pictures exhibited at the Redfern Gallery with statement of accounts and letters from the director, Rex Nan Kivell. Also there is a transcript of a programme edited by Peter Orr and produced by the Recorded Sound Section of the British Council in London of David Jones discussing slides of his pictures [c. 1972].

The file comprises a copy of Blake's River of Life: Its poetic undertones by Joseph Wicksteed privately printed in Bournmouth [1920s?], 43 colour and black and white engravings possibly taken from A Bibliography of William Blake by Geoffrey Keynes, 1921, and a postcard, 1922.

Invitations to exhibitions etc.

The file comprises invitations to exhibitions of various artists in London, 1944-1965, including Miro, Randolph Schwabe, H. Lee Shuttleworth, G. W. Hooper, Elizabeth Spur, Leslie Worth, Carl Frederick Hill, Graham Sutherland, and Henry Moore. Also, a photograph of a water colour by David Jones of a forest, two engravings, various blank postcards of places or artworks, and a pamphlet of a message by the Pope, 1965.

Art print postcards

The file mostly comprises unwritten postcards, many with a religious theme, depicting artworks, sculpture, places, museum pieces, and churches, with a pack of 19 small photographs from Sienna, and a postcard of soldiers in Flanders.

Chinese prints

The file comprises a map of Poo-Tung presented to Mr James Jones, David Jones' father, Chinese lettering, and various pencil sketches and drawings of Chinese scenes, some made by a student of Ningpo [Missionary] College.

The file comprises invitations to exhibitions at the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Hanover Gallery, Leicester galleries and various other galleries, predominantly in London, 1945-1970 (with gaps) with exhibition catalogues for George Stubbs (1957), Augustus John (1948), Andre Bauchant (1960), Paule Vezelay and Winifred Nicholson (1954), Ben Nicholson (1954), Lady Patricia Ramsay (1959), the '56 Group [Wales]', and The New English Art Club (1945).

Correspondence

David Jones was a prolific letter writer, and his correspondents were multifarious. He was part of a circle of young Catholic intellectuals, and was connected with artistic and literary circles, as well as a more aristocratic circle. He would often write many drafts of a letter before completing it, especially when writing to the press or to a scholar or critic. The correspondence deals with matters relating to religion, art, literature, history, Wales and more personal matters. -- The group comprises letters to David Jones from friends, acquaintances, publishers and art galleries; drafts letters from David Jones to friends, draft letters to the editors of newspapers; and copies of letters published in Dai Greatcoat : a self-portrait of David Jones in his letters, edited by René Hague.

Dai Greatcoat

The group comprises material collected by René Hague while editing Dai Greatcoat : a self-portrait of David Jones in his letters, (London : Faber and Faber, 1980), a collection of letters to H. S. (Jim) Ede, Harman Grisewood, T. F. (Tom) Burns, and René Hague. There are copies of letters from David Jones to them and others, and also biographical material, setting copies, and other material relating to the publication. They have been arranged into two groups and listed by Harman Grisewood.

Assembled biographical material

The series comprises biographical material assembled by René Hague for Dai Greatcoat, including letters or copies of letters from David Jones to Stanley Honeyman, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, René Hague, Jim Ede, Desmond Chute and Tom Burns; a transcript of an interview with David Jones, and letters to and from René Hague relating to the publication of the book.

Inventories

The file comprises a catalogue of the David Jones papers compiled by H. J. Grisewood April 27th 1975-October 1976, with a box list compiled at Cambridge University Library, 1983 of 'Group B' which was purchased by the National Library of Wales in 1985.
