Typescript drafts

The series consists of typescript drafts of In Parenthesis, including an early typescript dated 1932, the title and dedication, four versions of the preface, a typescript copy of the whole text, carbon copy of some parts of the text, notes for Parts IV-VII, a manuscript epilogue which was not used, and some additions to be inserted into the text.

Fragments

The file comprises fragments of letters, sketches etc. taken from the In Parenthesis drafts. They include incomplete letters written from Brockley in 1933 to Helen [Ede], a note by David Jones certifying to his illness, a note written from a hotel in Sidmouth, and five sketches.

Early typescript

The file comprises an early typescript draft of Part I 'All Men, children and upwards', pp. 1-18, 39, with manuscript revisions by David Jones. These typescripts are later than any of the manuscript drafts and were rejected from the 1932 draft whilst pp. 19-38 of the typescripts were retained (see LP2/2 and LP2/3).

Title, map and dedication

The file comprises carbon typescripts of the title pages and dedication with some revision, 1937, a later typescript version of the dedication, a colourful manuscript map of the trenches, and an index to the typesetting signs used by David Jones. There is a note on f. 1 by René Hague referring to the numbering of the Notes.

Preface 1

The file comprises a typescript draft of the Preface, dated Christmas 1935 in the typescript, but with significant manuscript revisions by David Jones dated March 1st 1937.

Preface 2

The file comprises a carbon copy of the 1935 typescript draft of the Preface, dated Christmas 1935 in the typescript, but with significant manuscript revisions by David Jones dated March 1st 1937. The corrections are similar but not the same as those in LP3/3. The 1937 typescript was made from this version.

Preface 3

The file comprises a typescript draft of the Preface, dated March 1st 1937, made from the carbon of the 1935 typescript (LP3/4). This draft includes some manuscript revisions by David Jones, and is marked off for printing and dated 24 March 1937 in another hand.

Preface 4

The file comprises a carbon copy of the final typescript of the Preface (LP3/5), pages 6-8 only, dated March 1st 1937. This draft includes some manuscript revisions by David Jones, which are repeated in the proofs.

Parts IV-VII

The file comprises carbons of the 1935 typescript of the text, with part of Pt. IV (pp. 90-96), and the whole of the text of Parts. V-VII (pp. 98-129, 131-145 and 147-178). The revisions in the typescript (LP3/7) are repeated here with a few additional revisions. This copy has been marked for the printers and apparently has been used for setting up as it is marked off for the galley proofs.

Parts I-VII

The file comprises a final typescript of the whole text, Parts I-VII, numbered 1-177, with p. 178 wanting. There are slight revisions in pencil by David Jones, notably in Part IV. It has been marked for the printers, but apparently it was the carbons that were used for setting up.

Notes

The file comprises complete carbons of the 1935 typescript of the Notes for Part IV to VII, numbered IV 1-20; V 1-12; VI 1-3; and VII 1-7-10 (with one inserted page after VII 7). They were probably typed in 1935, and contain significant revisions by David Jones in pencil. They have been marked off by the printer. The marking off shows that in the galleys the notes were in blocks following each part of the text.

Epilogue

The file comprises three manuscript drafts of a one-page epilogue to In Parenthesis, the second of them paginated 179 by David Jones (and so later than the 1936 typescript), the third paginated 183 (and so later than the revised ending to the 1936 typescript). On the third draft David Jones has written 'discarded'.

Proofs

The series comprises part of an early proof probably printed in 1936, twelve sets of proofs printed in 1937, and an unbound edition of the 1961 edition of In Parenthesis. The proofs were printed by Hague and Gill Limited, High Wycombe.

Inserts

The file comprises inserts to come between the final manuscript draft and the typescripts. There are pages of manuscript insertions for Part III p. 51, Part IV p. 79, and Part VII p. 177, with typescript copies of each of the insertions. The insertions for p. 51 and p. 79 are included in the 1935 typescripts and there are duplicates of the inserts in the final manuscript, but the insert for p. 177 does not appear to be the copy sent to the printers.

Early proofs

The file comprises proofs of part of Part VII probably made in 1936: three copies of text corresponding to pp. 153-172 printed in two columns on four newspaper-sized sheets, one copy corrected in pencil by David Jones (ff. 1-12); text corresponding to pp. 161-164 printed on two folio-sized leaves with notes in margin (f. 13); and one leaf, with text of pp. 161-163, differing only in spacing (f. 14). On these proofs, probably made in 1936, see René Hague David Jones p. 36. They were pulled on 'a type of Cope's Albion handpress'. Their text is not from the final typescript. It is possibly from the final manuscript draft before the last revision of that draft.

Proofs No. 1

The file comprises page proofs of pp. 1-9, 13-24 only with corrections by David Jones in pencil and red crayon. The pencil corrections are repeated in No. 2, but the red corrections are not incorporated until No. 5, presumably made after the return of proofs No. 2 to the printers.

Proofs No. 2

The file comprises another set of the same proofs and pages as No. 1 (pp. 1-9, 13-24) corrected by David Jones in pencil. From this (or its counterpart) corrections were made for Nos. 3-6.

Proofs No. 4

The file comprises another set of proofs No. 3 with the sections marked by David Jones 'my copy', and dated '17 Apr. 1937' by him on the second section. It has been stamped 'Marked proof' with the date '7 Apr. 1937' on page 91. It has been marked by David Jones in ink, pencil, red ink and red crayon, incorporating Faber and Faber's readers' corrections with his own. Not all corrections made in No. 5 appear in No. 4.

Proofs No. 3

The file comprises a complete set of proofs, page i-xxii, 1-225, revise of proof No. 2., entitled 'Faber and Faber's Readers Corrections'. The corrections marked in ink are made by Faber and Faber's reader, with further corrections marked by David Jones in pencil, red crayon and red ink,

Proofs No. 5

The file comprises another set of proofs No. 3, entitled 'Author's Corrections' stamped by the printers '7 April 1937'. It has been corrected by David Jones and returned to the press. Each section is signed 'DJ', with the date '14 April 1937' on Section 2, and with corrections by him in red ink and pencil. There are some comments by René Hague, mostly in blue crayon. Proof No. 7 was made from this.
