Desk diary,

Contains entries for some days comprising detailed observations and comments on the course of Welsh and British political and industrial life, especially relating to the problems besetting the coal industry. Many of the observations concern the National Union of Mineworkers and the impending closure of coal mines within south Wales. There are also some personal references and allusions.

Also included are a copy of minutes for a meeting of the General Advisory Council, 3 Nov. 1982; a copy of a paper by John Wilkinson, Secretary of the GAC, on the 'BBC coverage of the industrial situation, January and February 1979' [incomplete]; and copies of notes by both Lord Aldington, Chairman of the GAC, and David Webster, Controller of Information Services, regarding the reputation of the BBC.

Exercise book and notebooks,

An exercise book (33 ff. of text), 1940, entitled 'Sinking' and marked 'Mining Department Cardiff University', containing extensive handwritten notes and sketches, presumably made during Philip Weekes' undergraduate course in mining engineering. A notebook (93 ff. of text), 1939-1949, containing handwritten notes made during his early career on operations at Pochin Colliery, July 1942-April 1943, together with a list showing time spent at various collieries and work done, July 1939-April 1943; as well as extensive notes apparently taken on a visit to German collieries, Jan.-Feb. 1949. A second notebook (39 ff. of text), 1966, containing rough notes apparently taken on a visit to the United States of America, Sept.-Oct. 1966.

Correspondence and papers relating to the holding at University College, Cardiff of a mining scholarship by Philip Weekes from the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, the preparation of a thesis, Mr Weekes's practical training at Pochin Colliery, his attendance at meetings of the Manchester Geological and Mining Society, his period of national service in the Royal Air Force, his sitting the mining examinations of the Ministry of Fuel and Power, and his gaining the Colliery Mangers' Certificate. There are also a few letters concerning his subsequent employment for the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company.

College notebooks,

Five notebooks (and some loose notes) containing notes taken by Philip Weekes while a student at the Mining Department of University College, Cardiff, during the years of World War Two. They include notes on mine ventilation and mining, coal production, dust and disease, roof control, the problems of mechanical coal-mining, cleavage induced by mining, roof movements, machine mining, planning at the coal face, and planning and constructing mine roadways.

A Bargain and Sale, 25 May 1860, between George Robson and Robert Evans, of an undivided moiety of a certain leasehold of collieries, mines, etc. of coal, known by the name of Rock Vawr [Rock Fawr], and the double coal, and other minerals, situate in or under the Common called Brynymenin [Brynmenyn], otherwise Brynmenin Common, within the Lordship of Ogmore, County of Glamorgan, held of the Duchy of Lancaster for the residue of a term of 31 years from 25 March 1858.
