Print preview View:

Welsh culture

The series comprises a manuscript draft of the letter. This letter to the Editor of The Catholic Herald, 9 September 1948, seems not to have been sent, and remained unpublished.

Wales and Religion

The series comprises a collection of manuscripts by David Jones which Harman Grisewood has sorted into eight folders entitled 'Wales and Religion' and 'Religion and Wales'. They were written either as essays or letters to the press, or possibly both (see the note by Harman Grisewood in file LO2/1 explaining the difficulties of sorting these papers further). The drafts are written mainly in pencil, black biro and ink, on a variety of paper, with many corrections and alterations. Most are undated, with only four folios with the folowing dates: 1957, 1962, 1966, 1968. Many of the pages are numbered by David Jones . Most of file 2 appears to be letters to the Editor of The Tablet. File 7 includes a draft letter on the foundations of the Church in Wales and the vernacularisation of the liturgy. File 8 includes an article on early Christianity in Wales.

Grisewood, Harman, 1906-1997

Typescript drafts

The series consists of typescript drafts of In Parenthesis, including an early typescript dated 1932, the title and dedication, four versions of the preface, a typescript copy of the whole text, carbon copy of some parts of the text, notes for Parts IV-VII, a manuscript epilogue which was not used, and some additions to be inserted into the text.

Typescript drafts

The series consists of typescript drafts of The Anathemata: the final typescript, pages of the original typescript rejected after re-typing, a few re-typed pages rejected because they had been re-typed a second time, and carbons which were used by David Jones as working copies.

The Old Quarry

The series comprises manuscript drafts of 'The Old Quarry', Part 1, and typescript drafts of Parts 1 and 2.
Section III of The Roman Quarry consists of 'The Old Quarry Part One', 'The Agent', and 'The Old Quarry Part Two'. 'The Old Quarry' follows on from 'The Grail Mass'. The second half of the Old Quarry is mentioned in letters in 1940 and 1962 to Harman Grisewood.

The Narrows

The series comprises a complete manuscript draft of 'The Narrows'.
'The Narrows' was first published in the Anglo-Welsh Review, vol. 22, no. 50 (Autumn 1973) pp. 8-12, and in Agenda, Autumn-Winter 1973-1974. It was later published as a pamphlet with an introduction by Roland Mathias by the Interim Press in 1981.

The Hunt

The series comprises six files of manuscript drafts of the poem, scripts of a BBC recording in 1958, and drafts of an introduction to a recording for disc c. 1963.

The Fatigue

The series comprises twelve files of manuscript and typescript drafts of the poem 'The Fatigue' and its introduction, proofs, and scripts for a broadcast reading.
'The Fatigue' was privately printed by friends for David Jones' 70th birthday, on 1 November 1965. David Jones has dated the introduction to the poem August 18th 1965 on page 26. The BBC Third Programme (produced by Douglas Cleverdon) recorded David Jones reading this poem in March 1965. David Jones notes in these files that the poem was 'read on June 3rd 1964 for television' and 'read on Oct. 15 1964 for Brit[ish] Council for Harvard' [library of recordings]. It appears that this 'fragment' was written, or adapted from an earlier work, by David Jones following a request for material to be recorded.
