Ganed y bardd a'r darlithydd prifysgol Robert Williams Parry yn Nhal-y-sarn, sir Gaernarfon, yn fab i Robert a Jane Parry, a'i addysgu yng Ngholegau Prifysgol Cymru Aberystwyth a Bangor. Bu'n athro ysgol mewn sawl man, gan gynnwys Brynrefail, Cefnddwysarn, y Barri a Chaerdydd. Gwasanaethodd yn y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf o Dachwedd 1916 hyd Rhagfyr 1918. Ym 1922 fe'i penodwyd yn ddarlithydd yng Ngholeg Prifysgol Cymru Bangor, ac yno y bu hyd ei ymddeoliad ym 1944. Ystyrir R. Williams Parry yn un o feirdd disgleiriaf Cymru'r ugeinfed ganrif. Ennillodd glod ac adnabyddiaeth pan gipiodd y gadair yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1910 gyda'i awdl 'Yr Haf' (dan y ffugenw 'Llion'). Cyhoeddodd ddau gasgliad o gerddi, sef Yr Haf a cherddi eraill (1924) a Cherddi'r Gaeaf (1952). Rhai o'i weithiau mwyaf adnabyddus yw 'Y Llwynog', 'Eifionydd' ac 'Englynion Coffa Hedd Wyn'. (Am Hedd Wyn (Ellis Humphrey Evans), gweler hefyd dan y pennawd Cerddi'r Bugail o fewn yr archif hon.)
