Sefydlwyd Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg yn 1962 i hyrwyddo defnydd o'r iaith Gymraeg, gan ymgyrchu dros ddefnydd ohoni gan gyrff cyhoeddus, busnesau, a'r cyfryngau. Mae iddi hanes maith o lobio, a chynnal gwrthdystiadau a phrotestiadau cyhoeddus. Trefnwyd y Gymdeithas yn chwe rhanbarth a chelloedd lleol, dan arolygiaeth y Senedd. Cynhaliai cyfarfod hyfforddi blynyddol (Ysgolion Pasg) ac yr oedd 'Grŵp y Dysgwyr' yn adran ar wahân i ddysgwyr. Bu'r Gymdeithas yn ymgyrchu yn helaeth dros y blynyddoedd dros arwyddion ffyrdd yn y Gymraeg, cydnabyddiaeth gyfreithiol i'r iaith Gymraeg, addysg trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg, a chreu sianel deledu Cymraeg.
