Scope and content
A volume originally used largely by the Reverend Thomas Richards, Darowen as an account book, 1821-6, of the Darowen Auxiliary of the Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews ('Cymdeithas Gynnorthwyol ir Iuddewon' or 'Cyfaill Israel'). The Auxiliary Society was established on 12 January 1821 and the account book contains rules, lists of officers, particulars of individual subscriptions (and of collections previously made during the period 1816-20), and copies of letters of acknowledgment of annual contributions to the parent Society. The remainder, and by far the greater part, of the volume was subsequently used largely by Mary Richards to record transcripts of 'carolau', 'englynion', 'cywyddau', hymns, etc. by Hugh Jones (Maesglase), W. Thomas, John Morris, Aneurin Owain, Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), Sion Philip, Dafydd Rhys (Llanbryn Mair), [John Jones] 'Tegid', John William (Dolgellau), Thomas Jones (Creaton), Robert Davies (Nantglyn), William Wynne ('Person Llancanhafal'), Joseph Marpole, [?Thomas Roberts] ('Cyfell Cadfan' (1799), 'Philo Cadfan'), Cadwaladr Dafydd (Llan y Mowddwy), Owen Robert, David William [?Llandeilo Fach], David Harris (?Carno), Dafydd Jones ['Dafydd Siôn Siâms'] 'Dafydd ab Ioan' ('rhwymwr Llyfrau Penrhyn Deutraeth'), Rowland Hugh (Grienyn), David Ellis ('Dafydd Elis Gof Llan y Mowddwy'), D. Silvan Evan[s] ('Hirlas'), Henri Griffith ('Harri Goch'), Evan Evans ('[Ieuan] Glan Geirionydd'), E. William, Robert Parry (Eglwysfach, Sir Ddinbych), [Morris Jones] 'Meurig Idris', [John William Hughes] 'Edeyrn o Fon', Evan Jones (Llan Erful), E. Lewis ('E. ab Dewi') and Hugh Morus, and anonymous compositions. There are also a few memoranda and diary entries. Mounted in the volume are assessments for Dinas and Mall[w]yd of mizes for maimed soldiers and for maintaining poor prisoners, 17 September 1683. There are references in the volume to a number of manuscript sources, viz. p. 59 'o Lyfr Edward Jones Gwernphilip Llan Badarn fawr Sir Aberteifi', p. 107 'Copiwyd allan o hen lyfr Moelyrch 1868', p. 132 [recte 232] 'o Lyfr Llangadfan, and p. 237 'o Lyfr Llangadfan, neu Garth Beibio'.
