Vavasor Powel and others: Poetry

- 17 cent.
Part of Sir John Williams manuscripts
A volume containing religious poetry in various 17th century hands. It is possible that the greater portion of the book (pp. 9-132) is in the hand of Vavasor Powel, though his name does not occur anywhere; the poem entitled The Lamentation of Jeremiah (p. 14), for example, was by Powel and was printed in a slightly different form in The Bird in the Cage (1662). A considerable amount of the poetry was composed after 1660, while the author was in prison. Daniel Lloyd of Wrexham (d. 1656), to whose memory two elegies have been written (pp. 101-2), was a friend of Vavasor Powel.
