Sir Charles Thomas-Stanford (1858-1932) was born into a prosperous shipping family, and was mayor of Brighton, Sussex, 1910-1913, and Conservative Member of Parliament for Brighton, 1914-1922. Primarily a classicist (one of his best-known works was an edition of Euclid's Elements), he had a keen interest in archaeology, early books and local history, and collected many historical records in the course of his research.
