... He is very sorry for her father's illness and hopes he is recovered. She upbraids him for travelling so much the last day of their journey hither, but necessity has no law. His brother's illness on the road, with the expense of a physician at Bath, had greatly drained them of money, and they had occasions to preserve a little for their use after coming to Critchel. He will take better care of himself in coming home. Mention of her lock of hair and letter.

He conjectures that the addressee has not had leisure to reply to his letter, which enclosed another to Mr Grey of Duffryn and was sent to the Bear Inn, Cowbridge. Reference to a tablet.

Times are still very bad, etc. The prevalence of a severe and dangerous fever together with the croup and scarlet fever. Unfinished.

Is very much surprised that the addressee does not give them the satisfaction of knowing how he is. However he supposes it was the addressee's laziness, not his ill-nature, that is the cause of it. On the dorse and above the letter are some stanzas written apparently at a later date but in an (?) older hand. EW has written 'Maeseglwys Psh Llangyvelach' and 'Dafydd or Nant' in the margin. Unfinished.

Almost two years ago the addressee was pleased to permit the writer to open a freestone quarry at Pyle. He began to do so then, but being called suddenly away to a gentleman for whom he often worked in Dorset he was obliged to desire of his brother to carry on the work for him. As soon as the writer turned his back several at Pyle took away the stone raised at his expense. A renewal of the addressee's permission availed nothing. Reports (untrue) that the men they employed had not been paid. It is true that he has not carried on the work at the quarry as expeditiously as he could have wished as he was long detained from home by a broken arm and long sickness, but coming home last winter he forwarded the work as much as he could at the quarry and got to pretty good freestone at last .. (Incomplete.) On the dorse are a few lines 'from DG', a fragment (II. 1-6) entitled 'Cdd yr adar', a list of 'Books at Wm Morris', and a draft of a letter 'To the Editor of the Cardiff Gazette'. The last item is of later date than the others.

(?) A continuation of Item 65 beginning 'ni hûd ni fed.' On the reverse side are 'englynion' (2) attributed to Lewis Hopcin yr Ieuengaf and Lewis Hopkin yr hynaf respectively.

(?) A continuation of No. 21, ending 'lle bu'n hir y dreindir draw'. 'Cdd i berllanau William Harr[i] o'r Dyffryn olwg a Rhisiart ... o Dyllgoed.' On the reverse side (crossed out) are 'Englynion y Mai o waith (?) ... Gwilym', beginning, 'Yngwig mae odlig wiwdlos yn (?) dinen ...'.

(?) A list of the names of 13 subscribers to Poems Lyric and Pastoral (1794). The sheet appears to have been addressed to 'Mrs Carter'.

(?) A number of Bardic phrases (e.g. 'o dad i dad, o fardd i fyrddiwn', 'Pen a phont i'r Byd yw bardd', 'yngwydd goleuni haul', and 'Bardd wrth fraint a defod'), marked 'Pen a phont.' (Written on the back of part of a letter from [E. W.] in which ... 'milkwoman' and 'Mrs Yearsly' are mentioned.) (Iolo Morganwg MS 136/72).

(?) Observations related to Nos 5-6. One paragraph begins: 'Er dangos i'n cydwladwyr gwir athrawiaethau'r ysgrythur am Dduw, a pheth a ddywedant mewn Gwirionedd am Iesu Grist, yr ydym yn ymgorpholi'n gymdeithas tuag at argraphu llyfrau iw cyfrannu'n rhad i'r cyfryw ddynion ag...'.
