Paris journal

Journal containing holograph notes on Senior's visit to Paris, 4-28 February 1854. It includes conversations with: Faucher; Broglie; Thiers; Cousin; Circourt; Abel Villemain (1790-1867); Lavergne; Say; Rivet; Henry Ellis; Dumon; Duvergier de Hauranne; Duchatel; General Wojcieh Chrzanowski [Polish soldier; spelt by S.: Sharnowski]; Odillon Barrot; Count Kergorlay (1769-1856); Comte de Marcellus (b. 1800); Tocqueville ['T.A.'; there is a note by him on f. 178 verso]; Lanjuinais; Lamartine; Sir Howard Douglas (1776-1861), et al. The major topic of conversation is the Eastern Question and the imminent British and French intervention in the Crimean War. There are also comments on the political and economic situation in France; the political situation in various European countries, including Spain, Italy, Austria, Poland, Belgium and Russia; Louis Napoleon's character and relationship with his wife and Mrs Howard; military matters.

Journal containing holograph notes on Nassau William Senior's visit to Egypt, 18 November-31 December 1855. It includes conversations with: Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-94); Said Pasha (1822-63); Linant Bey [Adolphe Linant de Bellefonds]; Mougel Bey; Lord Canning (1812-62); Sir Frederick Bruce (1814-67); Stephan Bey, et al. Most of the conversations relate to the Suez Canal, as S. accompanied a group of engineers on an international commission to study the feasibility of such a canal. There are descriptions of all aspects of Egyptian life.

There is also an appendix containing: (i) a record of a conversation between S. and Ferdinand de Lesseps in Paris, 19 May 1856 (ff. 121-122); (ii) a copy of a letter (in French) from Said Pasha to de Lesseps (ff. 123-124); and (iii) a copy of part of a letter from Sir Frederick Bruce, 26 October 1856 (ff. 125-126).

Haddo, Scotland, journal

Journal containing holograph notes on Nassau William Senior's visit to Haddo, Scotland, 8-16 September 1856. It includes lengthy conversations with Lord Aberdeen; Arthur Gordon (1829-1912); John Bright (1811-89); Lord Haddo (1816-64); and Sir James Alexander Gordon (1782-1869). There are conversations on various aspects of British and European politics, including: Parliamentary reform; Puseyites; the French alliance; the Government's treatment of the Irish and the Scots; Maynooth; India; the Crimean War and its repercussions for Europe; and Bright's proposed system of government. There are many comments on a number of notable figures, including: Pitt, Wilberforce, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Gladstone, Lord Liverpool, Wellington, Sir Walter Scott, Thiers, et al. It includes a conversation with Henry Senior (1794-1861); Lord Rosse; Sir Stephen de Vere (1812-1904); W. S. Trench; Francis Trench; Sir Alexander MacDonnell (1794-1875); William Neilson Hancock (1820-88); Edward Senior; Baron David Richard Pigot (1797-1873); Archbishop Whately. Discussions relate mainly to the social, economic and political problems of Ireland, with particular emphasis being paid to: the Poor Law; the Irish Constabulary; religion; education; RC universities; the Phoenix society; Communism; and the Irish language. There are also conversations on astronomy. A copy of a letter, dated 15 February 1859, from Bishop Fitzgerald to Archbishop Whately, concerning religion and education, is on ff. 188-191 [another copy of the same letter is C834].
