Topics of discussion include the suppression of foreign newspapers in Naples; Catholicism in England; religious persecution; Neapolitan prisons; 'the disgusting population of Naples'; English foreign policy re. Naples; Poerio's trial; government spies; quarantine regulations; limitations or artistic freedom; the cholera epidemic of 1837; Neapolitan aristocracy; the revolutionary press; trade in Sicily; US asylum for Garibaldi; S's visit to the Palace; and Italian patriotism. There are lengthy descriptions of Neapolitan art, architecture and historical sites, e.g. Pompeii. One of Senior's companions was W. E. Gladstone. It includes conversations with Sir Thomas Frankland Lewis (1780-1855); George Cornewall Lewis (1806-63); Lord Monteagle (1790-1866); Stephen Spring Rice (1814-65); William Steuart Trench (1808-72) [Most of the conversations with Trench, an Irish land agent, were excluded from the published edition, presumably because the anecdotes were published by Trench in Realities of Irish Life, 1868]; Lord Rosse (1800-67) [some comments in his hand are to be found in the text, e.g. f.296 verso]; Professor Thomas Romney Robinson (1792-1882); Col. It includes conversations with: Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-94); Said Pasha (1822-63); Linant Bey [Adolphe Linant de Bellefonds]; Mougel Bey; Lord Canning (1812-62); Sir Frederick Bruce (1814-67); Stephan Bey, et al. Most of the conversations relate to the Suez Canal, as S. accompanied a group of engineers on an international commission to study the feasibility of such a canal. There are descriptions of all aspects of Egyptian life.
