Discusses political situation in Naples with: Carlo Troya (1784-1858); Tocqueville; Marchioness Salza [?Lady Strachan]; General Sabatelli; Prince Cometini; Giovanni Manna (1813-65); Marquis Salva; Prince Belmonte; Luigi Blanch (1784-1874); General Filangieri (1784-1867); Prince Radali; Marquis Michage, et al. Topics of discussion include the suppression of foreign newspapers in Naples; Catholicism in England; religious persecution; Neapolitan prisons; 'the disgusting population of Naples'; English foreign policy re. Naples; Poerio's trial; government spies; quarantine regulations; limitations or artistic freedom; the cholera epidemic of 1837; Neapolitan aristocracy; the revolutionary press; trade in Sicily; US asylum for Garibaldi; S's visit to the Palace; and Italian patriotism. There are lengthy descriptions of Neapolitan art, architecture and historical sites, e.g. Pompeii. One of Senior's companions was W. E. Gladstone. The journal also contains a number of remarks in pencil signed by 'H.G.', presumably Mrs Grote.
