'Gone White' / 'Skolly Boy' / 'No Bread on Table Mountain',

'Gone White' and 'Skolly Boy/No Bread on Table Mountain' are two very similar novels. 'Gone White' is possibly the earlier of the two. Some of the characters are the same in both novels and the storylines overlap. They centre around the coloured family of Clara September, especially her son, Bokkie and her daughter, Janna. 'Gone White' centres around Janna, whereas Bokkie is the main character in 'Skolly Boy'/'No Bread on Table Mountain'.

'The Rain Queen's Daughter',

Paul van Zyl, a young white Afrikaner, gains permission to live with an African tribe called the Lovedu to study their culture for his thesis. The tribe is ruled by Mujaji, the Rain Queen who maintains her power through strong taboos. The ill-fated romance between Paul and Tsokodena, the rain queen's daughter, highlights the cruelty of apartheid and the miscarriages of justice in South Africa. There are many drafts of this unpublished novel, written over a long period of time. A letter from the publishers suggests that the first draft was completed before 1961, and references to the death of Steve Biko in September 1977 dates the latter text post 1977. Two typescript versions remain, text A and B.

'Sjambock of the tribal god',

Historical events and characters are woven into this novel about Carl du Toit, an Afrikaner journalist, who meets Janna Molefe, an African woman reporter, after the massacre at Sharpville on 21 March 1960 when sixty-nine people were killed. Their relationship is forbidden by the Immorality Act which prohibits sex between white and black people. The sjambock is a whip which symbolizes power and punishment.
