Historical events and characters are woven into this novel about Carl du Toit, an Afrikaner journalist, who meets Janna Molefe, an African woman reporter, after the massacre at Sharpville on 21 March 1960 when sixty-nine people were killed. Their relationship is forbidden by the Immorality Act which prohibits sex between white and black people. The sjambock is a whip which symbolizes power and punishment.
