A scrap-book of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') lettered 'Cadw mi gei'. The manuscript items include a list in the hand of 'Myrddin Fardd' of family mottoes of North Wales interest; English translations by Henry W[illia]m Hewlett, 34 Great James Street, Bedford Row [London], c.1827-8, and Welsh translations by 'Myrddin Fardd', c. 1876-8, of public records relating to Pwllheli and Criccieth; glossaries by 'Myrddin Fardd' of Welsh words (e.g. obscure words, flower names); an explanatory list by 'Myrddin Fardd' of Caernarvonshire place-names; entries by 'Myrddin Fardd' of sales by him of manuscripts to D. G. Goodwin, Salop, 1893, and to J. H. Davies, Cwrt Mawr, 1899-1900; entries by 'Myrddin Fardd' of births, deaths and burials of members of his family; and a holograph 'englyn' ('Beddargraff Owen Jones (Manoethwy)') by E[llis] O[wen], Cefnymeusydd, 1866. The press cuttings cover a wide range of Welsh literary and antiquarian interests and include portraits of Welsh celebrities, prospectuses and reviews of publications by 'Myrddin Fardd', prospectuses of Arwest Farddol Glan Geirionydd, 1880, 1888-9, fragments of Y Beibl Cyssegr-Lan (1588), being the first complete Welsh translation of the Bible (with notes by 'Myrddin Fardd' on the disposal of two copies of this edition of the Bible once in his possession), etc. The volume is numbered '1' on the upper cover and on the upper end-paper.

A folder containing eight files of original letters and copies of letters and poetry from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Files 1-3: Transcripts of letters by Lewis and Richard Morris, mainly to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd') and Dafydd Jones of Trefriw, almost all published in Hugh Owen (ed.), Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, 1947-9, the remainder published in G. J. Williams (gol.) Llythyrau at Ddafydd Jones o Drefriw. Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Atodiad. Cyfres III, Rhif 2 (1942), and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). The original letters or copies from which these copies were transcribed are in the British Museum (Add MSS 14929, 15021, 15024, 15029) and the National Library of Wales (mainly Panton 74 and NLW MS 476). There is also a transcript of a letter from the Reverend Thomas Ellis, Holyhead to the Reverend Humphrey Owen and the Reverend J. Hoare, 1742 (the original letter is preserved in NLW MS 478), and a copy of Evan Evans's elegy to Lewis Morris, with notes on the text. File 4: Transcripts of letters from Edward Richard, Ystrad Meurig, c. 1759-1766, to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd'). There are also copies of two short letters to Evan Evans from Roderick Lewis, Trefeglwys, and William Howell, Llanidloes, which were written on the same sheet as Edward Richard's letter of 1 March 1766. The original letters are preserved in NLW MS Panton 74. A transcript of a letter from Edward Richard, 1766, to Richard Morris (from BM Add MS 15025), and extracts from letters from Edward Richard to Lewis Morris, 1759 and undated (from BM Add MS 15029). A holograph letter from Edward Richard, Ystradmeuryg, 1762, to Lewis Morris, Penbryn (published in Hugh Owen, op. cit. Part II, pp. 562-3). File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). Holograph letters (13) and some poetry,1791-1819, of D[avid] Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Waunfawr, Bettws St Garmon, etc. Some of the letters have been published in [John Jones] 'Myrddin Fardd', Adgof uwch Anghof (Penygroes, 1883). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. There is also some poetry in English by [John Blackwell ('Alun')] and in Welsh by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'). 'Ode to Charity', a translation into English [by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd')] of the 'awdl' on the subject 'Elusengarwch' by David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion'). The translator's name is not given but a note at the top of the first page reads 'Rec'd a Sovereign from J. Maughan Esqr. for Translating this'. There are some notes and emendations in pencil in another hand. On the last page, following the translation, are thirty-eight lines of an elegy in Welsh, (?) incomplete, on the death of [Frederick, Duke of York]. Pasted in at the beginning is a press cutting headed 'Darlith i'r Saeson. Araeth Mr Lloyd George. Bywyd a Barddoniaeth Cymru' giving an account of an address Lloyd George gave as chairman of a concert at Llanystumdwy.

An essay entitled 'Henafiaethau Llanarth a'r Cymydogaethau' (the antiquities of the Llanarth district of Cardiganshire) written by 'Ceredig ab Cunedda', 24 June, 1875, and submitted for competition at a Crown Eisteddfod held at Llanarth on 29 July, 1875. Inset is an elegy ('Galareb') on the death of Benjamin Evans, Aberaeron, by 'Omega'.

Mounted press cuttings of poetry in strict and free metres by R. Elias ('Meillionog'), together with marginal emendations and additions in the author's hand. Among the titles are 'Iaith fy Nghalon. An album compiled by John Lloyd James ('Clwydwenfro'), Congregational minister at March, Cambridgeshire, etc. The volume is almost wholly of Congregational interest, and relates for the most part to Glandwr Church, Pembrokeshire, and to the activities of John Davies ('Siôn Gymro' otherwise 'Siôn Llethi' otherwise 'Ioan Llethi'), who was ordained minister of the church in 1827. 'Galarnad ar farwolaeth W. O. Pughe, Yswn., D.C.L., F.A.S.', being an elegy (206 lines) on the death of W[illiam] O[wen] Pughe [lexicographer, antiquary, and poet] by 'Ywain Cyfeiliog'. The present copy was folded and sent by post to R. Saunderson, junior, Bala, with the ? author's proper name 'Griffith W. Edwards, G. ab Gwilym Padarn, Llanrug near Carnarv[on]' inscribed under seal in the bottom right-hand corner of p. 4. This suggests that the poem was forwarded to be submitted for competition at an eisteddfod, and the note 'Barnwyd y Farwnad hon yn fuddugol yn Eisteddfod y Bala, 1836. . .' inserted subsequently between the title and text appears to confirm the suggestion.

A volume containing 'englynion' and other poems mainly by Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'). Pages 1-60 are almost entirely in the hand of Robert Davies while the remainder of the volume is in that of William Owen [-Pughe]. In addition to the works of Robert Davies, some of which were published in his Diliau Barddas (Dinbych, 1827), the following poets are represented in the volume: W.O. [?William Owen-Pughe] (pp. 2-3), R. B. Clough (p. 86), W. Lleyn (p. 102), and ?Gwallter Mechain, [Walter Davies] (p. 125). Most of the transcripts appear to have been made between 1826 and 1831, and the complete work was prepared for the press in 1834 but never published. Denbigh, 1832, and p. 55, a broadside containing Marwnad Evan Thomas, o D' wysog, ym Mhlwyf Henllan; A Gladdwyd yn Nantglyn, ger llaw Dinbych, 1801 by T.E. [?Thomas Edwards, 'Twm o'r Nant'] (Caerlleon: W. C. Jones, n.d.), etc. The following note is to be found on p. 124 of item (c)1 above: 'Gorphenwn hyn, ganoldydd Llun, Myhevin 11. 1827 yn Athrova Iesu, Rhydyçain: y vi yno, pan oedd Aneurin yn çwiliaw cysysgriv [sic] o gyvreithiau Hywel Dda yno', which suggests that the transcript was made from 'Llyfr Coch Hergest'.

A notebook containing the bidding account of John Davies, 'Account of what we received 22 Decr 1807 being our Wedding Day at The 3 Compassess' (ff. 1-6); an incomplete copy of his elegy Marwnad ar Farwolaeth Owen Rees o Gaerfyrddin ... yn 68 Oed (Caerfyrddin, 1808) (inverted text ff. 8 verso-11 verso); and sermon notes.

A volume relating to William Jones (ca. 1825-93), Clwt-y-bont, parish of Llanddeiniolen, co. Caernarfon, compiled, 1893, by his son Griffith Williams Jones (d. 1924), Lewisham, London, with an index of contents (f. 100 verso). It comprises transcripts of letters of condolence on the death of William Jones addressed to various members of the family, many of them from Calvinistic Methodist ministers, and of englynion in his memory by 'Dewi Arfon' and 'Eifionydd'; and press cuttings of obituaries. Iems, 1923-69, relating to Griffith Williams Jones and to Lewisham Welsh Presbyterian church, of which he was a founder member, have been added on ff. 91 verso-3.
