Bethania, Aberfan Book of Remembrance
Facsimile copy of a calligraphic book of remembrance to deceased victims of the 1966 disaster at Aberfan, Glamorgan. The original volume was displayed at Bethania Independent chapel, Aberfan, and contained the names, dates of birth, and age upon death of 143 individuals (117 children and 26 adults) who died in the disaster on 21 October 1966, their names arranged under the month in which they were born. The official number of fatalities was 144 individuals (116 children and 28 adults). The identity of the calligrapher, and the circumstances surrounding the creation of the original volume, was unknown to chapel Trustees when asked in 2007.

The typescripts include a transcript, 1955, of a register of church members, 1806-1864 (ff. 6-37), with indexes of surnames and places (ff. 38-51); an incomplete transcript, 1950, of the original register of births, 1804-1837, and deaths, 1807-1814 (ff. 55-62), with an index of names (ff. 63-64); and a transcript, 1955, of part of an early history of the Church, probably written by Thomas Hopkins, a founding member of the Church (ff. 2-4). A covering letter from the donor, 22 July 1955, is included (f. i).

Minutes, 15 July-15 December, 1873, of a committee to consider the establishment of a British School at Bethesda, Caernarvonshire. The secretaries of the committee were John Jones, bookseller, and W. J. Parry, and the present volume is in the latter's hand.

A small group of papers, 1902, concerning the 'Bethesda Welsh Choir' / 'y Côr Cymreig o Bethesda' (f. 1), being Choir No. 2 of the Penrhyn Relief Fund, relating to a fundraising tour of London and South-East England during the Penrhyn Quarry Strike of 1900-1903.
The papers comprise a collection of signatures and autograph postal addresses of twenty-three choir members, 28 October 1902 (f. 1), 16 December 1902 (f. 2 recto-verso) and undated (ff. 3, 4), together with a note in the hand of C. Sheridan Jones, author of the book What I Saw at Bethesda (London, 1903) and secretary of the London Central Relief Fund Committee (f. 2 verso). These were written to thank their host on both occasions, Mrs [Harriet J.] Boggis, 4 Pembury Road, [Tottenham, London]. A group photograph of the choir is also included (f. 5), while a set of printed photographs of choir members, taken from an unidentified publication, have been individually mounted on f. 1 verso.

Literary papers of Beti Hughes, 1941-1996, including manuscript and typescript copies and some proofs of her published and unpublished novels, [1966]-[1979]; manuscript and typescript copies of her children's novels, one of which is a translation and abridgement of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, [1961]-[1969]; notebooks including poetry, scripts, drafts and newspaper cuttings, [1958]x[1981]; together with various papers that include correspondence from Saunders Lewis, exam and competition certificates, scripts, drafts of novels, the Daniel Owen Memorial Competition adjudication, various ballads, and an order of service for unveiling a memorial stone for Beti Hughes, 1943-1994. The archive consists almost entirely of deeds relating to the Bettisfield estate in Flintshire, [c.1240]-1951, and estate and family letters, 1588-1889. The remainder of the archive includes two medieval French vellum rolls, one containing a metrical version of the life of St Melor, written about the end of the thirteenth century, and the other a short religious poem, [15th cent.]; draft sheets of Sir Thomas Hanmer's 'Garden Book' [17th cent.]; pedigree rolls; rolls of proceedings at sheriffs' tourns and manorial courts of the lordship of Maelor Saesneg, 1413 and 1444; court rolls of the manor of Overton, 1618, and of the manor of Overton and hundred of Maelor Saesneg, 1672-1720; letters and warrants relating to the Civil War, 1642-1650; letters relating to Richard Steele, Puritan minister at Hanmer, 1660, and papers relating to the Bagillt, Kelsterton, Flint Mill, Boars Head, Flint Marsh, Englefield, Soughton Mountain, Dee Bank and Lletty collieries, Flintshire, 1794-1846.

A volume containing a copy, in a hand of the second half of the sixteenth-century, of a verse play in Middle Cornish, based upon the life of St Kea, a Celtic saint venerated in Cornwall and Brittany (see Albert le Grand (de Morlaix), Les vies des saints de la Bretagne Armorique (Quimper, 5th edition, 1901), pp. 561-567) (ff. 1-8 verso).
The second part of the text (ff. 9-20 verso) derives from the accounts given in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniæ (Books ix.15, x.1-13, xi. 1-2) of King Arthur's quarrel with the Roman emperor Lucius Hiberius over the tribute which the Britons were required to pay to Rome, and of the clandestine relationship of Arthur's nephew, Modred, with Queen Guenevere.

Bible presented to Henry Richard
A copy of The Holy Bible ... (Oxford, 1854) presented to Henry Richard (1812-1888), Secretary of the Peace Society, as part of a testimonial from a few of his friends, whose names are recorded 'as a token of their high appreciation of his devoted and persevering public labours, to advance the great cause of Permanent and Universal Peace'. Included in the list are the names of John Bright (1811-1889), Richard Cobden (1804-1865) and Samuel Gurney (1816-1882).
