A composite volume almost entirely in the hand of John Jones (1796-1857), Calvinistic Methodist minister, of Tal-sarn, Caernarvonshire, containing notes of sermons and (?)addresses and some extracts from printed religious works e.g. William Rees ('Gwilym Hiraethog'): Traethawd ar Grefydd Naturiol a Datguddiedig ... (Dinbych, 1841). One sermon is written partly on the dorse of a statement of account due from John Jones to Richard Jones [blacksmith], 1831.

A small notebook probably in the autograph of the Reverend Hugh Pugh (1803-68), Mostyn inscribed '"Tarian Rhyddyd" &c. Novr. 1838' and containing minutes, November 1838 - July 1839, and a list of co-proprietors in connection with Tarian Rhyddid, a Dymchwelydd Gormes, a monthly publication, the first number of which appeared in January 1839. The 'Reverend H. Pugh' is named as secretary and the Reverend W[illia]m Rees as editor. At the reverse end of the volume are some sermon notes.

The majority of the letters are written to his son Evan, printer, Portmadoc, but a few are addressed to others of his children, namely Catherine, Edward, Jane, Owen E[van(s)], and Eliza[beth Margaret]. Among the topics discussed by the writer are printing processes and the purchase of equipment; printing estimates; publications by the writer and by his son Evan; news of relatives and friends; money matters, with copious references to negotiations for loans; an invitation to Dublin Exhibition (1853); the purchase of writing slates; travelling booksellers; the exchange of publications with other publishers; an address by Kossuth; a legal action against Evan Jones; the revival of the Rifle Corps at Llanrwst; a lecture on Garibaldi by W[illiam] Rees ['Gwilym Hiraethog']; the writer's decision to discontinue the publication of books; the writer's health; the writer's gardening and farming activities; the boy Hartwell [i.e., Griffith Hartwell Jones, rector of Nutfield, Surrey]; etc. Also included in the volume are a holograph letter from D. Forty-four holograph letters, 1842-1855 and undated, from [the Reverend] Edw[ ar]d Morgan [vicar of Syston, 1814-1869, and of Ratcliffe on the Wreak, 1818- 1867, both in co. Leicester], from Aberffraw (I), Bangor (I), Cheltenham (I), Pyle [co. Glamorgan] (I), and Syston. The names of the addressees are not ascertainable but the contents of the letters indicate that the majority were written to one person, possibly Thomas Jones of Chester, the recipient of the letters in NLW MS 12757C. Several of the letters contain advice to recipient with regard to preparatory studies, initial steps to be taken, etc., in connection with a desire he had expressed of offering himself as a candidate for Holy Orders. The college at St. Bees, the school at Cowbridge, the Mechanics' Institute, Liverpool, and St. David's College, Lampeter, are mentioned in this context. There are also numerous references to the biographies or selections of the letters of the Calvinistic Methodist clerics or ministers [Thomas] Charles, [John] Elias, Howell Harris, [David] Jones, Llangan, [Daniel] Rowland, and W[illia]m Williams, Pantycelyn, which the writer was preparing for publication or had already published. The letters also refer to correspondence of [the Reverend] Jo[hn] Humphreys [C.M. minister] in the writer's possession, the need to tell Mr. H. Griffith to proceed with a Welsh memoir of [John] Elias, the death of recipient's father, the possibility of recipient writing a memoir of his father and of the aforementioned [John] Humphreys, the writer's willingness to help recipient with his 'intended Periodical', Thomas Parry's account [Cofiant] of [the Reverend John] Davies [C.M. minister] of Nantglyn, contacting the Reverend E. William Rees ('Gwilym Hiraethog') i Fywyd a Llên ei Gyfnod'. The work was submitted for competition at the National Eisteddfod of Wales held at Bangor, 1931, ? by D. E. Jenkins, under the pseudonym 'Mabon Egwad'. The text is followed by a list of the Reverend William Rees's publications, a bibliography, and a list of ten appendices, all of which, except No. 10 (consisting of a lengthy extract from Cymru, cyf. IV, tt. 313-14, in which some of the characteristics of Rees's style of preaching are analysed), are missing from the present copy.
