Papers relating to John Jones, Junior

An album, [19 cent., second ¼], probably compiled by a member of the Clay family of Liverpool and St Asaph, which includes some thirty-one items, (1545/6)-[1716], relating to John Jones, son of Col. John Jones, the regicide, and his family (ff. 1-14, 16-19).
Among these items are some fourteen letters addressed to John Jones, Junior, 1663-1714 (ff. 1-3 verso, 4 verso, 5-6, 16, 17), and two to his wife (f. 3); three letters to Thomas Jennings, Dudleston, 1633-1634 (ff. 7 verso-8); a copy of The Post Man, And the Historical Account, &c., 230 (27-29 October 1696) (f. 9); a poem on the Battle of Oudenaarde, 1708 (ff. 10-11); a handbill for a performance of Henry IV, [Part I], [1716] (f. 13); a final concord levied on properties in Salisbury, (1545/6) (f. 18); and a letter from Robert [?Nedham] to Roger Puleston of Emral, [?1582] (f. 19). The album also includes papers of the Clay family, 1739, 1743, 1806-[?1843], being mostly letters addressed to Henry Clay (onetime Mayor of Liverpool) from correspondents including aristocrats connected with Liverpool (ff. 66 verso-73 verso passim, inverted text); various pencil or pen and ink sketches and watercolour paintings, [19 cent, first ½], at least some of which are by Henry's daughter B[arbara] F[rances] C[lay] (ff. 57 verso, 60 verso, 61 verso, 62 verso, 76 verso-81 verso (versos only), 84 verso, 85 verso, 86 verso); newspaper cuttings, [1831]-[1841] (ff. 26 verso-35); and miscellaneous engravings, 1809-[?1840s] (ff. 14 verso, 36-37, 39-43, 88 verso-90 verso). Items found loose within the volume have been tipped in, either in situ or on blank leaves (some 22 ff.).

They include documents relating to proposed improvements to cottages, 1937-1938, and the restoration of Trewern Hall, 1983-1988; farm and household accounts, with miscellaneous financial papers and vouchers, 1952-1986; correspondence and papers concerning agricultural improvements and grant applications, 1977-1985; correspondence concerning the tenancy of Plas Newydd, Trewern, 1982-1984; personal and family papers, 1949-1984, relating to William Herbert Chapman (1955-1982) and to Murray Lloyd Chapman, including the latter's research notes and papers, on the history of Trewern and Montgomeryshire families and his work in civil engineering, 1973-1986. Plans of the estate and proposed improvements to the farm buildings accompanied some of the papers. Papers relating to Phase 2 Restoration of Trewern Hall, 1990-1993; were received, including a diary of events in two volumes; papers relating to Ivor William Lloyd Chapman and Margaret Eleanor Chapman; and Gregory-Allen papers. This group remains uncatalogued. A further collection was received August 2014 - this group also remains uncatalogued.

There are also records of various other families linked to Gogerddan by marriage: Loveden of Buscot Park, Berkshire, Lewes (or Lewis) of Llan-gors, Breconshire, and of Abernantbychan and Coedmor in Cardiganshire, Hean Castle in Pembrokeshire and Hurst in Berkshire and Wiltshire, Pughe of Mathafarn, Montgomeryshire, and via the Pughe family, Salesbury of Rug. Merionethshire. There are several sub-groups of records from the other estates. The first of these is Abernantbychan, 1416-1918, which includes rentals, 1722-1887and valuations, 1790-[c. 1881]. The other estates comprise Mathafarn, 1403-1754, Aberbechan and Main, 1238-1684, Rug, 1529-1744, and miscellaneous estates which include Peterwell and Nanteos, Cardiganshire, Llanboidy in Carmarthenshire and Montserrat, West Indies, 1562-[c.1887],The BRA deposit consisted of papers mainly from the offices of solicitors, Atwood and Hughes of Aberystwyth, and Boys and Tweedie of London. It included original Gogerddan deeds, together with maps, correspondence, papers relating to enclosures in the manor of Genau’r-glyn, sales and purchases of land, mining and court cases, and papers amassed during administration of the estate after the death of Pryse Loveden in 1855. The material in the BRA Deposit has been amalgamated with the main Gogerddan catalogue, albeit as discrete files for retrieval purposes.Overall, the collection reflects the historical importance of Gogerddan and the Pryse family within Cardiganshire. Several major themes emerge from the estate records: the history of property ownership and building development in the Aberystwyth area, estate work such as land drainage, building improvements, agriculture, forestry, mining, gamekeeping and foxhunting, county politics, and participation in large-scale commercial enterprises such as the railways. The personal papers illustrate the family’s interests and their deep concern over financial issues during the final decline of the Gogerddan estate.
