Papers relating to various aspects of estate and household administration, mainly of Wynnstay and the house in St James’s Square, London. Many of them date from the time of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 4th Bart. There are also papers and correspondence concerning the various other estates belonging to Wynnstay and occasionally non-Wynnstay estates. As many of the papers cover more than one estate at a time, they have been listed according to type, comprising miscellaneous estate administration papers, 1682-1911; agents’ correspondence (main series), 1777-1813; general bills and receipts, 1639-1789; household account books, 1768-1857; and various inventories and catalogues, 1749-1946.

Papers deriving from official administrative procedures, local government and justice at county level, in Merioneth, 1590-1792; Caernarfonshire and Anglesey, 1523-1715; and North Wales (misc.) and Shropshire, 1538-1797.

Title deeds and associated documents relating to the manor of Maenan in Caernarfonshire, parishes in and around the Conwy valley, and the commotes of Rhos and Is Dulas in north-west Denbighshire. The files comprise Abergele, 1359-1600; Eglwys-bach, 1598-1708, 1812-1815; Llandrillo, Betws, Llaneilian-yn-Rhos and Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, 1626-1693; Llangernyw and Llanrwst, 1559-1696, 1740; Llysfaen, 1563-1670; and the manor and lordship of Maenan, 1658-1667.

Estate administration papers belonging mainly to the Llwydiarth estate and the Montgomeryshire portion of the Llangedwyn estate, comprising expired tenancy agreements and associated papers, 1839-1929; and miscellaneous estate administration papers, [16]83-1888. Note that the expired lease agreements (apparently in their original arrangement) also incorporate a large number of items belonging to the Mathafarn, Tirymynech and Rhiwsaeson estates; and the miscellaneous estate papers include some items relating to Glan-llyn, Merioneth.

Title deeds relating to properties of the Llwydiarth estate (and some previously belonging to Glascoed) in the county of Montgomery. The files comprise: the commote of Caereinion and parish of Castell Caereinion, 1525-1760; Garthbeibio, 1550-1734; Llanerfyl, 1551-1731; Llanfair Caereinion, 1524-1839; Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, 1533-1785, 1907; Llangadfan, 1551-1731; Llangynyw, 1542-1701; and Llanwyddelan, Manafon, Welshpool, miscellaneous Llwydiarth deeds, and miscellaneous Montgomeryshire deeds (outsize), 1544-1764. The deeds include numerous leases by the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth, and after the death of Edward Vaughan (d. 1718) by his trustees and family, and later by his surviving daughter, Anne, and her husband, Sir Watkin Williams Wynn.

Papers deriving from legal disputes mainly concerning inheritance and the recovery of debts and legacies, involving Sir William Williams of Llanforda, 1674-1735, [1769], and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, [1792]-1793.

Legal papers from disputes of the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth with various adversaries, 1600-1716. The series comprise: miscellaneous cases of the Vaughan family, 1600-1664; disputes of Vaughan family and the Price family over the title to properties in Eglwysegl, Dinbren and Trefor Isaf, 1604-1664; disputes about the Llwydiarth estates, involving Sir Robert Vaughan and Edward Vaughan, 1616-1669; disputes about the Llwydiarth estates, involving Charles Salesbury and other trustees of Edward Vaughan, 1650-1669; disputes about the Llwydiarth estates, involving William and Gabriel Salesbury and other trustees of Edward Vaughan, 1666-1675; and disputes over Llwydiarth and other estates involving Edward Vaughan, 1666-1716. Several of the more substantial cases are interrelated, continuing from one generation of estate owners and trustees to the next, e.g. the claims by Magdalen and Katherine Salesbury, and Sir Charles Lloyd and his sons (alias Vaughan).

Title deeds for properties belonging to Glan-llyn and the other Merioneth estates arranged in three series, the first listing several parishes alphabetically from Corwen to Llanycil, 1386, 1441-1789; the second describing Llanymawddwy, 1501-1709; and the third listing parishes alphabetically from Maentwrog to Trawsfynydd, with miscellaneous Merioneth deeds at the end, 1529-1734.

Original, draft and copy marriage settlements, and other family settlements of the Wynn family of Gwydir, 1578-1681, of the Williams family of Chwaen Isaf and Llanforda, and their descendants the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, 1664-1859, together with the families who were related to them by marriage, namely Eyton of Watstay, 1499-1687, Thelwall of Plas y Ward, 1515-1708, Kyffin of Glascoed, 1546-1675, and Vaughan of Llwydiarth, 1569-1719, with related deeds and documents associated with disentailment and resettlement. Endorsements: Most of the documents are endorsed with notes of contents and several have original reference numbers allocated by the estate.

Estate rentals pre-1772. See also Wynnstay MS 86 (described elsewhere in this hierarchical structure with the other Wynnstay MSS) for early accounts and rentals (1300/1 onwards). Since this rental was deposited at NLW some years before the arrival of the main series of rentals and has been known as Wynnstay MS 86 for many years, it was deemed best not to alter this reference number, and not to include the volume in the general series of Wynnstay Rentals.

Estate rentals 1804-1899. Since, by 1808/9, the Wynnstay estate was more or less fully grown, each indentifiable unit in this group has been treated separately (although the rents might be gathered by the same collector). In many cases (e.g. Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents), details concerning a particular estate will be found in one continuous list from 1808 to 1899. However, many estates were brought together in the re-arrangement of the system which took place during the early 1860s. In 1885, another change occurred following the death of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 6th bart. Estate rentals, 1772-1808. In 1772/3 there was a major re-arrangement of the rent collecting system. The manor of Cyfeiliog does not form part of this re-arrangement, except in that from 1772 the Tirymynych estate appears consistently in the same collection as the Rhiwsaeson and Mathafarn estates. The manor of Cyfeiliog does not re-appear until 1786. The other existing collections are re-arranged into five numbered collections, and a number of other collections. The post-1809 rentals have been treated differently.

Papers mainly from the Denbighshire election of 27 November 1868 in which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn of Wynnstay was the Conservative candidate. The Liberal candidates were Robert Myddleton Biddulph and George Osborne Morgan. The papers comprise poll books, check books of the clerks, and a large bundle of vouchers, bills and correspondence, 1868-1869.
