Biographical history

This block of estates corresponds to the headings for Llangedwyn and Llansilin in the rentals for 1809-1860. It also incorporates properties which previously belonged to the Glascoed estate. The three estates are sometimes difficult to differentiate since many of their properties lay in the same parishes. Some parts lay in the Denbighshire parishes of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr, Llangadwaladr, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Llansilin. The Montgomeryshire portion of the Llangedwyn estate lay in Hirnant, Llandrinio, Llanfechain, Llanfyllin, Llangynog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain, Llanwddyn, Meifod and Pennant [Melangell]. Several properties had been transferred to this group from the Llwydiarth rent collection and vice versa, by 1809. The Glascoed estate was acquired through the marriage of William Williams to Margaret, daughter of Watkin Kyffin of Glascoed, 1664, and the property appears in the rental of 1672. The Oswestry properties formerly belonging to Glascoed have been listed under that parish (q.v.). From 1680 the Glascoed/Llansilin estate incorporated Glantanat, purchased by Sir William Williams from Plas y Ward. Llangedwyn was acquired with Llwydiarth by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn upon his marriage to Anne Vaughan in 1715.
