Biographical history

The Foley family were descended from a John Foley, architect to the bishops of St Davids and constable of Llawhaden castle in the 14th century. Richard Foley is mentioned in regard to Ridgeway in 1711. John Foley built a new house there which was completed in 1741. In 1811 the estate was owned by John Herbert Foley who married Emily Ann Chambers of Totteridge, Hertfordshire, in 1794. By 1871 Ridgeway was the seat of a R. P. Davies.

Archival history

The papers were formerly in the possession of Messrs Richard Furber & Son, 2 Gray's Inn Square, London, before they were deposited at NLW.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

Deposited by A.T. Woods, 2 Gray's Inn Square, London, WC1 per The British Records Association (B.R.A. 1933) in 1964, followed by a donation of some 200 letters by Mrs Sylvia R. Woods, Burford, Oxfordshire, in March 2001 (item no. 350).
