An imperfect manuscript consisting of thirty folios of uniform size and two smaller leaves, with the two halves of ? the lower cover of an early nineteenth century periodical or part publication, which at one time seems to have served as a protective covering, bound in at the beginning. A considerable part of the original manuscript appears to have been lost as the volume was described by the Reverend John Williams ('Ab Ithel'), circa 1856, as containing 'about 100 pages' (see L. James: Hopkiniaid Morganwg . . . (Bangor, 1909), p. 91). The former protective cover bears the inscription 'Llyfr Llanfihangel Iorwerth. Cywyddau amrafaelion. Siôn Cent hyd Dafydd Hopcin o'r Coetty. Englynion Eiry Mynydd, &c.', in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg'), and the contents consist of transcripts of Welsh verse mainly in strict metre. Dafydd Hopkin of Coety, co. Glamorgan is sometimes named as the copyist (see L. James: op. cit., p. 91; TLLM, tt. 229, 267; and IMCY, t. 139). An imperfect volume, the contents consisting of transcripts, in a hand possibly of the first half of the seventeenth century, of Welsh poems being mainly strict-metre poems in the form of 'cywyddau'. These are numbered and, if the manuscript when complete contained the whole sequence, the folios at the beginning containing poems 1-18 and most of poem 19 are now wanting. Many mid-volume and possibly some end folios are also missing. Hughes, and Richard Hughes (? whether the last three named were the same person). Pp. 611-33 contain three poems two of which are attributed to Huw ap Wiliam ap Dd. ap Gronw and Siôn Morys.

Date 1766', and the contents include free-metre verse ('cerddi', etc.) by 'Brys Bras Brwnt', Robert Williams, Robert Roberts, Dafydd y prydydd Hir (o Lan fair Talhauarn), Maurice ab Robert, Evan Ellis, John Cadwaladr, Hugh Jones (Llangwm), Rouland Jones (? of Pandy, Llanuwchllyn), Rees Jones, and Thomas Edwards; 'cywyddau' by Rice Jones, Edwart Rouland, Griffith Philip, Thomas Prys, Lewis Morice, Richard Phylip, Hugh Lloyd Cynfel, 'Y Cardwr Du', Dafydd ab Gwilim, Siôn Tyddur, Ellis Rowland, John Dafis, Morys Dwyferch (sic), and Richard Edwards; and 'englynion' by Hugh Jones (o Langwm).

An imperfect volume of free-metre poetry ('cerddi', 'dyriau', and 'penillion') by William Pellis (1704), Dafydd Manuel, John Rhydderch, Ffoulk Lloyd, Hugh Roberts, Kyffin Caerfyrddin, Huw Morys, Richiart Abraham, Robert Humphreys ('o Ragad'), Edwart Rolant, and Thomas Jones, together with some minor later additions. The volume was written during the period 1702-1709 and is in the hand of Hugh Roberts, 'wevar by trate', 'of tan rogo' ('Trigfannol tan rogo yn aber Geley dinbuch'). The manuscript also bears several later names, such as Hugh Jones (1773, 1779), David Williams (born 1779), William Ouan(e)s (1778), 'Hughs Hughs', Llandrillo, Thos. Hughs 'of Llwydga', Wm. Evanes of Nant ycha', Robert 'Highs' (1734), etc.

A composite volume almost entirely in the hand of the Reverend Robert Williams (1810-81), Rhydycroesau, near Oswestry. It contains a list of contents and a complete transcript of Peniarth MS 152 ('cywyddau' and 'awdlau' by Gutto'r Glynn, etc.), completed at Rhydycroesau, 21 December 1870; a transcript from Brogyntyn MS 2, with an English translation, of a 'cywydd' by Tudur Penllyn transcribed 2 February 1871; two copies of a 'cywydd' by Sion Kain transcribed from Peniarth MS [116], 14 November 1876, with relevant marginal pedigrees, poetry in strict and free metres by Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'] from 'Cydymeth Ifiengtid; sef Cerddi Cowyddau, ag Englynion tra dewisol na buant yn Argraffedig yr rioed hyd eitha fy ngwibodheth, sef Gwaith amriw rai o brydyddion cymru wedi gasglu gan Dafydd Evans, Llanfihangel, 1785'; 'Cywyddau Cywilyddus o [ffug-]waith Gweyrful Mechain', a 'cywydd' by Tydur Penllyn and 'englynion' by Iorwerth Vynglwyd, from 'Llyfr Hir Llywarch Reynolds' (NLW MS 970) and Llanstephan MS 35; and an incomplete list of contents of Cwrtmawr MS 242. A small imperfect volume containing Welsh poetry and an item of prose written for the most part c. 1600 in various artificial scripts by the scribe of Peniarth MS 65 [Owen John, R.W.M., I, 454] and NLW MS 13081B (Llanover B. 23), with a few additions of slightly later date in other hands at the end. There is a note (? incomplete) mentioning Mary John, the wife late of Richard Lewys, and others who entered a house in the parish of Mynythusllon (167). The date 1625 occurs on p. 165.

A notebook containing transcripts by J. H. Davies of six 'cywyddau' by Siôn Tudur, five from Celynog MS XXVI (i.e. NLW MS 552]. The source of the sixth is given as 'Ll. 637' [i.e. NLW MS 435].

An imperfect manuscript containing fifty 'cywyddau' and five 'awdlau' written during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The majority of the poems are drafts by, and in the respective hands of, the herald bards Rhys Cain and his son Siôn Cain of Oswestry, the former being represented by twenty-seven poems of which some are dated between 1582 and 1612 and the latter by twenty poems of which some are dated between 1609 and 1634. Other poets represented in the volume are William Llŷn, James Dwnn, 1616 (holograph), Edward ap Raff, Richard Cynwal, Lewys ap Edward, and Siôn Phylip. About three fourths of the poems are hitherto unrecorded. The volume is made up of individual poems written on separate papers which were previously stitched, though probably not for the purpose of covering and binding in book form, and as in the case of other manuscripts deriving from the Cains, e.g., Peniarth MS. 117, each paper bears evidence of having at one time been folded and filed in a bundle, generally with an endorsement, until eventually it became worn and tattered at the creases. The title of one 'cywydd' by Rhys Cain has been added in the hand of Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt.

Five uniformly bound notebooks numbered 1-5 containing a collection made by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') of the poetical works of Owen Gruffydd, Llanystumdwy (d. 1730), transcribed from Peniarth MS 124 (see 502 and 505), NLW MS 799 and other sources (?NLW MSS 18 and 11816, etc.), together with some printed items and (in 503) a few 'englynion' by William Elias. The lists of contents at the beginning of 503 appear to relate to Cwrtmawr MS 467 and NLW MS 799 respectively.

Poems by Lewis Dwnn, mainly of Montgomeryshire interest, transcribed by T.W. Hancock from Peniarth MS 96.

A collection of 'cerddi', 'carolau', etc. by Hugh Morris, together with a 'cerdd' by Huw Jones, Llangwm, a 'cerdd' by the Reverend Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], anonymous 'englynion, 'carolau' and some financial accounts, 1805 and undated. The volume is in the hand of Huw Jones, Llangwm, with a few later additions by Elizabeth Maurice and by Mary Richards, Darowen. It belonged to Thomas Powel, 1804, and Martha Powel, 1805, and also bears the names of Henry Powel, 1756, John Jones, carpenter, Pentregayr [Oswestry] and Martha Edwards.

A mid-eighteenth century collection of 'cerddi', 'ymddiddanion', etc. by H[uw] M[orys], together with a few poems by Thomas Edwards ['Twm o'r Nant'], Dav[id] Shadrach, David Thomas ('o sir Garen[ar]fon') Thos. Jones (Maes y Cernddi 'in Cowny' [sic]), and anonymous poems, farm accounts and memoranda, 1773-6, and a veterinary recipe. The volume is written in three main hands, of which the third is that of Dav[id] Shadrach.

A manuscript of the second quarter of the eighteenth century containing 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'Ymddiddanion' and 'dyrïau' by Huw Morris, with a number of poems by Ellis Cadwalader, Edward Davies ('o Rhiwlas'), Evan Vaughan ('o Gastellmoch'), Cadwalad[r] ap Robert, Moris Rhobert ('o sir feirionydd'), Thomas Davies ('o sir Drefaldwyn'), Arthur Jones, Robert Cadwalad[r] ('o Blwy Pennant'), Richd. Thomas D'd ('o Sir Fon'), Mathew Owen, Thomas Robert ('o Lyn Ceiriog'), Richard Foulkes? and John Edwards, and anonymous poems; a 'cywydd' and 'englynion' by Rich[ard] Abram, Moris ap Evan ap David, Hugh Morrys, Edward Morris ('or Perthi Llwidion'), Richard [Davies] ('Esgob dewi') and Ragiar [sic] Kyffin; English verses by John Davies and John Hughes, and anonymous poems; an account, 1736, of wages paid the workmen for raising a fence upon [the river] Ceiriog 'under pentre gwyn a Tenem[en]t of the Hond. John Myddelton Esq. [of Chirk Castle]', together with a copy of a covering letter to John Myddelton from Richd. Foulkes; ... Bound in at the end of the volume is an original power of attorney, 1674, of Oliver Thomas of Shewsbury [sic], Salop, yeoman, authorising his brother Thomas Rees of Llanymowthwey, Montgomeryshire, yeoman, to sue or to compound persons subscribed for specified debts (backed for the purpose of repairing by a printed prospectus of Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'): [Diliau Barddas, Dinbych, 1827]). The manuscript is written in several hands, among them that of Richard Foulks.

A badly mutilated manuscript of the early eighteenth century containing 'carolau', etc., and a 'cywydd' by Huw Morris.

A collection of 'cerddi', 'carolau', 'penillion', etc. in free metres by Hugh Moris and Rogiar Jones and numerous anonymous poems and scraps of verse. Also included are a rental of chief rents of Cynlleth yr Iarll and a rental of the tithe of Llangadwalader, Denbighshire, both undated, and a medical recipe. A note by Dafydd Marpole in Cwrtmawr MS 225, p. 86 attributes the present manuscript to the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Among later additions to the volume are holograph 'englynion' by Joseph Marpole ('yn llegys'), 1779. The spine is lettered 'Gwaith H. Morys a Roger Jones'.

It consists largely of 'cywyddau', 'carolau', 'cerddi' and 'dyrïau' by Huw Morys himself, with a few poems in both strict and free metres by Owen Gwynedd, Humphrey Owen, Simwnt Vychan, William Miltwn [Midleton, Myddelton], Doctor Sion Kent, Roger Kyffin, Sion Sgrufen and John Davies ('of Rhiwlas'), and anonymous poems. The volume is lettered 'Barddoniaeth Huw Morys'.

[i.e. Panton MS 68 now NLW MS 2034]; 175-88, an alphabetical list of Welsh bards 'o Lyfr D'dd Ddu o'r Eryri'; and 188-98, miscellanea including transcripts of 'englynion' attributed to Siôn Mawddwy, Ieuan Tew, William Philip, and D[afydd] ab Gwilym, miscellaneous triads, genealogical data relating to various Welsh bards and Syr Rhys ap Thomas, etc. Pp. 207-390 (previously paginated 1-184) contain a collection of maxims, proverbs, triads, sayings, etc., attributed to Cattwg Ddoeth and described on a 'title-page' to the section ( p. 199) as 'Llyma Ddoethineb Cattwg Ddoeth o Lancarvan' and in a concluding note (p. 390) as 'Llyfr y cyntaf y Gwyddfardd Cyfarwydd'. In a note on the aforementioned 'title-page' (p. 199) Edward Williams claims to have transcribed this collection in 1799 from a manuscript in the possession of Siams Thomas of Maerdy Newydd, co. Glamorgan. Preceding and following the actual text of the collection are transcripts of a prefatory letter dated 1685 (pp. 201-06) and of the concluding note already referred to (p. 390) both of which are attributed to the Glamorgan scribe and copyist Thomas ab Iefan of Tre Bryn as compiler of the manuscript from which Edward Williams was allegedly copying (see TLLM, t. 172; IM, tt. 291-4). Pp. 391-477 contain a transcript of a collection, in alphabetical order, of over three thousand Welsh proverbs attributed to Cattwg Ddoeth ('Llyma Ddiarhebion Cattwg Ddoeth . . . sef yw hwnn Ail Lyfr y Gwyddfardd Cyvarwydd'). This collection, according to the aforementioned note at the end of the preceding section (p. 390) attributed to Thomas ab Iefan, had been compiled by the said Thomas from various sources and formed a continuation of the previous section. Edward Williams's claim with regard to the Siams Thomas volume is probably intended to apply to the contents of pp. 391-477 as well. The contents of pp. 199-390 have been published in The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales . . ., vol. III (London, 1807), pp. 1-99.

A volume of transcripts of poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym, together with a few 'englynion' and 'cywyddau' by Wm Morris, G[ruffudd] Grug, Dafydd ap Edmund, Rhys Gôch Glan Ceiriog, Dafydd Nanmor, Iolo Goch, R[obin] Ddu, and some anonymous 'englynion'. The transcripts are taken from UCNW Bangor MS 6. A note by Mary Richards, Darowen on p. 1 ascribes the volume to John William[s], musician ('Cyfansoddwr Tona'), Dolgelley, probably John Williams ('Ioan Rhagfyr') (see Thomas Parry (gol.): Gwaith Dafydd ap Gwilym (Caerdydd, 1952) pp. c1xviii-clxix). At the end of the volume is a table entitled 'Rhannau Monwent Dar-Owen megis y dosparthwyd ag y cyweiriwyd hwynt ar eiriol David Davies vicar yno, gan ddechrau, o barth dwyrain Ty'r Vicar ag felly diwygio oddi amgylch Mai yr 28 1636' (' ... carefully transcribed out of the original by me Lewis Jones Vicar of Darowen' - a Chopiwyd genyf inneu or Terrier Darowen. M. R. Dar[owen]'). Tipped into the volume are a bond, 14 February 1690/1, from David Jones of Cowarch, Merionethshire, gent. to John Thomas Rees of the same, yeoman for the observance of covenants, and a poem in free metre entitled 'Myfyrdod y Parchedig Mr [Roderick] Lewis Periglor Llanbrynmair Uwchben Bedd ei ddiweddar Wraig', 1829. Among a number of items laid on the inside lower cover is Ychydig o gynghorion buddiol i Bobl Ieuainc, Wrth fyned i wasanaeth (Treffynnon, n.d.).

A composite manuscript in the hand of David Richards (1725-82), curate of Llanegwad, Carmarthenshire containing 'cywyddau', etc. by Lewys Glyn Cothi, Raff ap Robert, Lewys Daron, Lewys Menai, W[ilia]m Llyn, Ie[a]'n ap Madog, and Dafydd ap Gwilym, and anonymous poems; 'englynion' by D[afyd]d ap Edmwnt, [Richard Davies] ('Escob Dewi') and H[uw] Lewis; extracts from 'cywyddau' by Ieuan Tew Brydydd, I[euan] Deulwyn, R[h]is[iart] Philyp, Sion Tudur, H[uw] Llwyd [Cynfal], and T[homas] Prys; extracts from William Baxter: Glossarium Antiquitatum Britannicarum ... (Londini, 1719); a stanza by [John] Dryden in honour of St David's Day; lists of contents of 'Hen Lyfr Carpiop [sic] B[en] Simon'; 'Llyfr Dauliw Ben Simon', and 'Llyfr y Brut Ben Simon'; 'Englynion y Misoedd' by Aneurin Gwawdrydd; 'Llyma Ddifregwawd Taliesin'; 'Llyma Ystori Owain ap Urien Reged'; 'Llyma val y Cafad Taliessin'; 'Llyma Ystori Saith doethion Rhufain'; 'Cyngor Arystotlys i Alexander mawr i ydnabod'; lists of words from the poetry of D[afydd ap] G[wilym] quoted in John Davies: Dictionarium Duplex, etc. The name of the scribe occurs twice on one of the fly-leaves.
