History

Albert Tilley (1896-1957), mace-bearer of Brecon cathedral, was born in Widnes, Lancashire. After being wounded on the Somme in 1916, he was sent to Brecon to recuperate, and remained there for the rest of his life, becoming the first mace-bearer of the new cathedral there in 1923. He steeped himself in the history of the cathedral, town and county of Brecon, and collected many historical records in the course of his research.
