Biographical history

Albert Tilley (1896-1957), mace-bearer of Brecon cathedral, was born in Widnes, Lancashire. After being wounded on the Somme in 1916, he was sent to Brecon to recuperate, and remained there for the rest of his life, becoming the first mace-bearer of the new cathedral there in 1923. He steeped himself in the history of the cathedral, town and county of Brecon, and collected many historical records in the course of his research.

Archival history

Tilley acquired the deeds from an unknown source, apparently in the course of his private research. Notes by John Lloyd, the Breconshire antiquary, also came into his hands.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

Donated by Albert Tilley, Brecon, 1956; The Right Reverend The Lord Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, 1960; The Dean and Chapter of Brecon Cathedral, per Lieut.-Col F. M. Pryce, Brecon, 1965.
