Note

Ganed y bardd a'r cyfrinydd Francis Thompson yn Preston, Sir Gaerhirfryn a'i addysgu yng Ngholeg Ushaw (athrofa Gatholig ger Durham), ac yng Ngholeg Owens (bellach Prifysgol Manceinion). Dechreuodd hyfforddi i fod yn feddyg, fel ei dad, ond gadawodd ei astudiaethau i ddilyn ei alwedigaeth fel bardd a llenor. Bu'n cysgu ar strydoedd Llundain am dair blynedd nes y'i cymerwyd dan eu hadain gan y bardd Alice Meynell a'i gŵr, Wilfrid; gyda'u cymorth hwy, cyhoeddodd Thompson ei flodeugerdd gyntaf, Poems, ym 1893. O 1897 ymlaen, canolbwyntiodd ar lenyddiaeth, gan ddwyn ysbrydoliaeth o'r mannau y bu'n byw ynddynt yng Nghymru a Lloegr. Bu farw o'r ddarfodedigaeth ym 1907 a'i gladdu ym Mynwent Gatholig y Santes Fair, Kensal Green, Llundain. Ystyrir The Hound of Heaven yr enwocaf o'i gerddi.
