Biographical history
Stalag IVB was a Second World War prisoner of war camp in Germany, designed to hold up to 16,000 prisoners. It was located near the town of Mühlberg-on-Elbe, between Berlin and Dresden. Soldiers from thirty-three different countries passed through the camp. Stalag IVB was liberated by the Soviet Red Army on 23 April 1945, by which time it was overflowing with 30,000 prisoners, 7,250 of them British. Overcrowding led to food, bedding and clothing shortages. Around 3,000 prisoners died in the camp – mostly due to tuberculosis and typhus.
