The Sleeping Lord and other fragments is a collection of nine poems which was first published by Faber in 1974. Four of the poems are spoken by Roman soldiers stationed in Palestine in the early decades of the first century AD, and three of the poems are set in the Celtic world at the extremities of the Roman Empire. In 1934 David Jones visited Jerusalem as a convalescent with Eric Gill, and the themes about the Roman soldiers derive from his visit to Palestine. David Jones had been working on these poems over a period of twenty years before publication. Six of the poems appeared in the David Jones Special Issue of Agenda, Vol. 5, Nos. 1-3 (Spring-Summer, 1967).
