Biographical history
The Vaughan family owned the Pontfaen estate, Pembrokeshire, since at least 1501 until the marriage in 1625 of Francis Laugharne, son of John Laugharne of St. Brydes, Pembrokeshire, and Lettice Vaughan, daughter and heiress of James Vaughan of Pontfaen. In 1750 or 1751, Anne Laugharne, daughter and heiress of William Laugharne of Pontfaen, married Rowland Philipps of Orlandon, Pembrokeshire, who then adopted the surname Philipps Laugharne. The Pontfaen and Orlandon estates then descended upon John Philipps Laugharne, John Edmund Philipps Laugharne(alive in 1816). His heir may have been Sir William Philipps Laugharne and, if so, the estates were in some financial difficulties by the mid-1820s at the latest. In 1823, the Pontfaen estate was sold to a Henry Rees of the parish of Roch, Pembrokeshire. In 1835, Sir William Laugharne Philipps conveyed in trust for sale the Orlandon estate and by 1839 it was the property of William Charles Allen Philipps.
