As the note at the end of the photocopied poem notes, Kirkup came to public attention in 1977 after the newspaper Gay News published 'The Love That Dares to Speak Its Name', following which Mary Whitehouse, then Secretary of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association, successfully prosecuted Dennis Lemon, editor of Gay News, for blasphemous libel.
