Pen y Bryn, in the township of Cristionydd Cynrig and parish of Ruabon, Denbighshire, was held by John ap David ap Llywelyn in 1587. Llywelyn was a son of John ap David of Plas Madog. The same family held the estate until the 18th century, when John Jones (alive 1770-1788) held the Pen y Bryn estate, then comprising property in the townships of Cristionydd Cynrig and Dinhinlle Uchaf, as well as property in the township of Penley, Flintshire, left to him by his kinsman, Roger Hanmer of Maes Gwaelod. John Jones married Mary, sole daughter and heir of Roger Maddocks of Prees Henlle and Daywell in the parish of Whittington, Shropshire. Their son, John Maddock Jones (dsp) dissipated and sold all the estates of his father and mother, excepting only the Penley property and a tenement in Pen y Bryn that was entailed on William Maddocks Williams, his nephew. Eleanor, the eldest daughter of John and Mary Jones, was their eventual heir, and married William Williams, canon of St Asaph and rector of Ysgeifiog, by whom she had issue, including William Maddocks Williams above.
