The charters date from the foundation of Margam Abbey in c. 1147 until its dissolution in 1536. They include several gifts to the abbey by the earls of Gloucester, as well as royal charters and papal bulls. Together with the rolls they form one of the most complete series of archives of any medieval abbey in Great Britain. Following dissolution, the abbey and its lands were acquired by the Mansell family; some of the documentation relating to this is in the Margam estate deeds section.
