Scope and content

Letters to Charles Hayes of Bloomsbury Square and Highgate, Deputy Governor of the Royal African Company, from Sir Charles Wager at the Admiralty Office, Samuel Horsey, Thomas Corbett of the Admiralty Office, Alexander Stuart of Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, Winnington, H. Fox, Findlater and Seafield of Cullen House, E. Sparke, and William Corbett at the Pay Office, 1733-1748. The contents concern mainly the protests of the French about British encroachments on their settlement and trade at Senegal, and the support of the Duke of Newcastle and Lord Waldgrave in addressing the problem. Other letters deal with personal recommendations for employment in the Company; restitution to the relatives of Charles Gordon of the ship Diligence for his effects; a claim against the Company by Miss Rogers; and an invitation by William Slawman to engage in the supply of slaves from Gambia to Buenos Aires, 1747.
