John Lloyd Williams, MP, was born in Pantperthog, Merionethshire, in 1888, and brought up at Pant Gesail, Merionethshire. He was educated at the National School, Machynlleth, and the Central Labour College, London, 1919-1920. He worked as a miner for twelve years. By the early 1940s, he was a journalist in Glasgow; he was a member of Glasgow Corporation and the Glasgow Welsh Society and lectured at the Scottish Labour College. He was Labour Member of Parliament for the Kelvingrove division of Glasgow, 1945-1950, narrowly defeating the Conservative candidate in the general election of 1945; he unsuccessfully contested the seat in 1951 and 1955. He subsequently returned to Wales, living in Borth and Bow Street, Cardiganshire. He conducted research in several historical fields, including the history of Machynlleth and Dolgellau, wrote articles and essays, some submitted for eisteddfod competitions, and broadcast on the BBC and HTV.
