Letters to the Ladies of Llangollen

Eight letters, 1778, to Mrs Elinor Goddard (née Shuldham) relating to the flight to Wales of Sarah Ponsonby and Lady Eleanor Butler, together with thirty-two letters, 1781-1831, to the Ladies of Llangollen, arranged alphabetically by correspondent. The correspondents include Edmund Burke (1), 1790; Hester Lynch Piozzi (2), 1800-1801; Arthur Wellesley, first duke of Wellington (2), 1820-1829; and William Wilberforce (1), 1823.
Also included are autograph published verses by Thomas Campbell ('Stanzas to Painting', ff. 28-29) and William Wordsworth ('A stream, to mingle with your perfect Dee ...' and 'Look at the fate of summer flowers ...', ff. 95-96), all differing slightly from the published versions; a transcript of a sonnet by John Bligh, earl of Darnley (f. 19); and verse, in French, attributed to Anna Seward (f. 68).

Poetry, correspondence and other miscellaneous family papers, 1776-1880, [?1927], relating to the Mostyn and Lloyd-Mostyn family of Mostyn, Flintshire, and the Lloyds of Pengwern, Flintshire.
The papers include: (i) poetry, 1776-[1838x1843] (ff. 1-5), comprising verses to Sir Roger Mostyn, 5th bart, by Richard Williams of Fron, 1776 (f. 1), a song in honour of Sir Edward Pryce Lloyd, 2nd Bart (later 1st Baron Mostyn) by Mrs Piozzi, 1806 (f. 2), verses 'To the Lady Harriett Mostyn on the birth of her ninth child' by Angharad Llwyd, 1838 (f. 3), and 'Lines on Sir R[obert] W[ilia]mes Vaughan, Bart' by R. Owen, [1834x1843] (f. 5), all apparently unpublished; (ii) some sixteen letters, 1801-[1864] (ff. 6-23), including juvenile letters from Edward Mostyn Lloyd[-Mostyn] (later 2nd Baron Mostyn) to 'Granny' [possibly his great-aunt Frances Mostyn], 1803-1806 (ff. 7-11), an incomplete transcript of 'Savage Mostyn's Indian Letter', dated 10 July 1858 (ff. 17-18), and a letter, [?21 February 1864], from Essex Mostyn to her sister Bessy [Elizabeth Weekes], concerning the disastrous fire at Pengwern, home of their Uncle and Aunt, on 19 February (f. 19); (iii) genealogical and heraldic notes, 1810-1880, [?1927] (ff. 24-40), including an outline of the history of the Lloyds of Pengwern, 1810 (ff. 24-25), notes for a proposed coat of arms for the Mostyn family, [?1831] (ff. 30-33), and notes by F. de Witt, [1860s] (ff. 36-37); (iv) papers, 1823-1838, relating to the lease of a property in Lower Seymour Street, London (ff. 41-44); (v) various lists of visitors and guests at Mostyn, 1832-1877 and undated (ff. 45-57); and (vi) miscellaneous other items including an essay by F. Mostyn, 1781 (f. 58), extracts from the will of Sir Roger Mostyn, 5th bart, [mid 1830s] (ff. 60-61), and a memorandum of Elizabeth Mostyn's last wishes, [?1842] (f. 62).
