Family papers and estate records of the Evans and Davies-Evans families of Highmead, Cardiganshire. -- The estate records includes rentals and inventories of the estates of Highmead, 1800-1890, Penylan in the parish of Llanfynydd, Carmarthenshire, 1817-1850, Dolgadfan and Trefeglwys in Montgomeryshire, 1850-1859, and Pantglas in Carmarthenshire, 1879-1897, and of the estate of James Evan Bayly in the parish of Llanwenog, Cardigan, 1822-1840; account books of the Highmead estate, 1757-1899; records of various estates and farms in Carmarthenshire, and Breconshire; and deeds of estates in Breconshire, Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan, Pembrokeshire and Radnorshire, 1549-c. 1880. -- The family and personal papers include the diaries of Anne Evans, John Jones of Blaenos, the Rev. D. H. T. G. Williams, Herbert Davies-Evans, and his son H. Davies-Evans, 1790-1891; pedigrees of, and biographical notes on, the Davies-Evans family and the Llwynhelig family and other genealogical records, family and business letters, late 18th-20th centuries; legal precedents, agricultural memoranda, press cuttings, school exercise books, drawings and sketches, a large body of letters received by Major Herbert Davies-Evans, and miscellaneous papers relating to his service in the militia and in the South African War, 1891-1903 and a group of letters addressed to Anne Evans, 1786-1802. -- Other papers include election papers for Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire, 1802-1841; returns and orders of the Carmarthenshire Yeoman Cavalry, 1804-1809; accounts of overseers of the poor and vestry minutes for Llanwenog, 1805-1817; court leet records of the manors of Mabedrid and Mabelview, Carmarthen, 1811-1836; Carmarthenshire turnpike records, 1822-1830; and the log books of four ships, kept by H. D. Evans, 1856-1858.

Letters to Welsh correspondents

The file comprises manuscript drafts of letters to persons identified by Harman Grisewood as 'Welsh correspondents & acquaintances', including Alun Jones, [Leonard] Twiston-Davies, [Rhydwen] Wiliams, T. H. Parry-Williams and Jonah Jones. Amongst the subjects discussed or referred to are The Anathemata ('I'm working on a book that I suppose may be finished some time but heaven knows when---', 1944); early British and Welsh history; Christopher Dawson [1970]; a commentary by Alun Jones on 'these pieces of mine' (the sleeve notes for the record in the 'Poets of Wales' series of David Jones reading selections of his work?); and the situation of the arts in modern civilization (1972); the inscription made by him and presented to Sir Thomas Parry-Williams by the Hon. Society of Cymmrodorion in 1967; a short questionnaire concerning Wales and the First World War (see The London Welshman, December 1964, pp. 3-4); and the 'Letter from David Jones' published in Poetry Wales, David Jones Special Number, vol. 8, no. 3 (Winter 1972), pp. 5-9. There are a number of drafts of a letter to Gwynfor Evans congratulating him on his electoral victory at Carmarthen in 1966.

Carmarthenshire elections, &c.,

Material from the library of the Reverend John Lloyd, Brunant, Cayo, relating almost entirely to late eighteenth and early nineteenth century parliamentary elections for the county of Carmarthen and for the county of the borough of Carmarthen. They consist of poetry, including 'An Essay on the Characters &c. of the Governors of the Boro' of Carmarthen', 1789, 'From plain Truth addressed ... to the Cambrian Sappho' by Mrs. [Maria Justina] Cowell, 1802, 'The Carmarthenshire Parson and a Freeholder. A Dialogue' by [Lewis] Lewis, rector of Clovelly, 1802, etc.; a state of the poll for the hundred of Cayo in the Carmarthenshire election, 16 July - 2 August 1802; holograph and autograph letters, 1807, of Herbert Lloyd, Carmarthen, [Lord] Robert Seymour, Llandilo, and Danl. Price, Junior, Talley; addresses to the Freeholders of the county of Carmarthen by 'A Freeholder', 1807, and to Lord D[ynevor] by 'A Carmarthenshire Freeholder', undated; and printed matter including a poem entitled 'County of the borough of Carmarthen. November, 15th, 1796. The Independent Burgesses's Glory', 'Carmarthen Election Committee, April 5th, 1803. Extract from Mr. Adam's Speech at the Close of the Proceedings', addresses to the electors of co. Carmarthen by W[illiam] Paxton, 1803, 1806, R. Seymour, 1807, and [Sir] Willm. Mansel, Iscoed, 1807, and to the electors of Cardigan Boroughs by J[ohn] Vaughan, Crosswood, 1807, 'The recent Roman Catholic Concerns considered' ('Diweddar Negesau'r Papistiaid wedi eu hystyried') by 'A Protestant of Carmarthenshire' ('Protestant O Sir Gaerfyrddin'), etc.
