Levy to John St. Loe Strachey,

Macmillan Co. have refused to publish writer's book although it is 'of decided value and interest.' Wishes to send MSS to recipient who might find a suitable English publisher; no. of economists consider it an important work; anxious for advice.

Levy to John St. Loe Strachey,

Will not use unpublished MSS: 'You may rest, assured that I have no secret designs whatsoever, with reference to the materials you have been so kind as to place under my custody.'.

John St. Loe Strachey to Levy,

Insists that no unpublished MSS be used by Levy and that all Senior papers must be returned if recipient unwilling to give assurance to that effect. Draft,.

His intentions re publishing his research an Senior; intends to publish a monograph on some aspects of Senior's economic ideas; proposes to publish Senior's lectures and write a separate vol. on Senior's life and works; gives outline plan of latter, entitled 'The Career and Thought of Nassau W. Senior.' Considers that it would be 'utterly absurd' for him to stop his researches 'abruptly at this juncture.' Is prepared to submit his MSS to the recipient for 'omission of certain minor details.'.

John St. Loe Strachey to Levy,

Suggests that recipient submit his Memoir to Mrs Strachey so that '... she can then ask for the omission of anything which she does not desire published.' Is prepared to correct his MSS; explains allusion to Miss Strachey, who was writer's aunt; information re 'The Club'; the work of the Master in Chancery. Pleased that missing letter has been found; explains his alleged 'false inference' re Senior's religious views; feels that 'our economic opinions are very much affected by our corresponding religious views.'.

Would like to receive an acknowledgment that recipient has received the MS of his book on Senior's religion; wonders whether she has found missing letter.

Has discovered missing letter; feels recipient has misinterpreted Senior's alleged secrecy over his religious views; Senior made public his views during the Hampden case of 1836; Oliver Senior opposed to recipient's interpretation of Senior's religious beliefs; writer considers that recipient's proposed book contravenes previous agreements. Does not consider that Senior's religious news is a 'private affair'; has received consent to publish Senior's letter to Whately, dated July 14, 1827 [C493] which deals with Senior's religious news; believes he has returned letter dated Dec. 9, 1814.
