The file comprises sixty letters from Valerie Wynne-Williams to David Jones, 1958-1964, numbered 1-55 by David Jones (with nos. 11, 36, 43 and 44 missing, and numbering 54 and 55 used twice). There is also a photograph of a child, 1969, copies of Valerie Wynne-Williams' wedding invitation designed by David Jones, a 'cover' to the letters decorated by David Jones, 'Llythyrau oddi wrth Elri ferch Rachel Tachwedd 1958-Rhagfyr 1969, Ionawr 1960- ', and a postcard from Ray [?Howard-Jones] .

'Unused' manuscripts

The file comprises unused manuscript material by David Jones taken from the The Roman Quarry sources, which the editors did not include in the published volume. It includes manuscripts which may belong to The Anathemata, The Wall, The Dream of Private Clitus, The Fatigue, The Tutelar of the Place, The Roman Quarry, The Tribune's Visitation, The Hunt, and The Sleeping Lord, with a few pages on an essay on the arts. The manuscripts have been divided into eleven files by Tom Goldpaugh, who has numbered the first ten files (ff. 1-320) in the top left hand corner, with a description for each file. The eleventh file (ff. 321-397) contains notes by Harman Grisewood and René Hague and miscellaneous manuscripts.

The file comprises groups of manuscript drafts of The Anathemata, including drafts of notes to pages 55 and 72 (ff. 1-10); comment on sheet 369 of a typescript (f. 12); text numbered 66.H.12.i (ff. 14-17); text numbered 46H and 20 (ff. 19, 21); material relating to the length of pieces for broadcast (ff. 25,29); and a picture of two faces (f. 37). The file also includes comments on and corrections to unidentified texts, and some other manuscripts which appear to date later than The Anathemata.

The file comprises five letters to David Jones from T. J. Morgan and others at the University of Wales relating to his honorary degree ceremony, with a typescript copy of his acceptance speech in absentia, 1960, and also draft letters from David Jones relating to the Aberystwyth degree ceremony and to an honorary degree from the University of St Andrews.

Unbound copy of the 1961 edition

The file comprises a complete unbound copy of the 1961 edition of In Parenthesis published by Faber and Faber Ltd, with a note of introduction by T. S. Eliot. This copy has a list of errata and corrigenda by David Jones written on the half-title page.

Typescripts and correspondence

The file comprises two typescript copies of Chapters 1 and 2 of the Commentary, with corrections and related notes. There are also letters to René Hague from Tom Dilworth, 'Helen', 'Mollie', Harman Grisewood, William Blissett, William Cookson, R. Brinley Jones and others, 1974-1976; and typescript copies of letters from René Hague, 1974-1976.

Typescript letters

The file comprises three incomplete typescript letters from David Jones, a single page of the typescript text of an article by him entitled 'Ray Howard-Jones : An Introduction' (The Anglo-Welsh Review, vol. 17, no. 39 (Summer 1968) pp. 53-4) and a fragment of typescript. One of these letters, all of which appear to have been intended for publication, concerns the Mabinogion (1950), another is a St David's day message (1960) and the third appears to have arisen from a review of The Great North Road (London, 1961) by Frank Morley (1961).

Typescript etc.

The file contains an important typescript of 'The Dream of Private Clitus', showing corrections by David Jones which were the last of a long sequence of revisions and corrections, dated September 1963. The poem was published in March of the following year, and the text is the same in the version which appeared ten years later in the Sleeping Lord. There is also a letter from Sonia Brownell who typed for him in 1963, a manuscript page and a photostat.

The file comprises typescript copies of material for The Roman Quarry, 1979-1981, with a manuscript page by David Jones. There is also René Hague's notebook, and numerous letters to René Hague (ff. 1-60), many relating to Dai Greatcoat, 1976-1980, from Walter Shewring, William Blissett, Harman Grisewood, Helen [Ede], Anne [Seymor] (Anthony d'Offay Ltd), Nicolete [Gray], Jim Ede, Robert Buhler, Nicholas Jacobs, Rosemary Goad (Faber), Malcolm Yorke, Jeremy [Hooker], Laurence Bevenot, Mike W. Richey, and others.

Typescript drafts

The file contains typescript text of 'The Wall', noted in David Jones's hand on the wrapper as having been corrected 'up to date May 25 1957' (in a similar note at the head of the first page the date is given as 23 May 1957).

The series consists of typescript drafts of In Parenthesis, including an early typescript dated 1932, the title and dedication, four versions of the preface, a typescript copy of the whole text, carbon copy of some parts of the text, notes for Parts IV-VII, a manuscript epilogue which was not used, and some additions to be inserted into the text.

The series consists of typescript drafts of The Anathemata: the final typescript, pages of the original typescript rejected after re-typing, a few re-typed pages rejected because they had been re-typed a second time, and carbons which were used by David Jones as working copies.

The file comprises typescript copies of the items used in The Roman Quarry in various stages of revision while René Hague was deciding upon the text that should be published; and copies of letters about The Roman Quarry between Harman Grisewood and René Hague. It also includes six pages of undated David Jones manuscript fragments.
