Various writings and essays sent to Philip Weekes, [c. 1965]-May 1992, mainly typescript and generally in duplicated or photocopied form, together with some covering letters, including a copy of 'Events Leading to Nationalisation: Draft of a Brief for a Staff Training Course' by T. J. Morgan, [c. 1965]; a typescript entitled 'Hanging on in the Valleys' by Hywel Francis, 10 Jan. 1986; and a handwritten essay entitled 'Case Study: The South Wales Coalfield, 1973-1986' by Koh Shimomura, April 1989.

Tredegar Iron and Coal Company,

Correspondence and papers relating to the holding at University College, Cardiff of a mining scholarship by Philip Weekes from the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, the preparation of a thesis, Mr Weekes's practical training at Pochin Colliery, his attendance at meetings of the Manchester Geological and Mining Society, his period of national service in the Royal Air Force, his sitting the mining examinations of the Ministry of Fuel and Power, and his gaining the Colliery Mangers' Certificate. There are also a few letters concerning his subsequent employment for the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company.

Handwritten and typescript notes for speeches and lectures made by Philip Weekes, Feb. 1953-Dec. 1997, together with some printed programmes and other material, including a copy of a paper entitled 'Progress in Support of Gate Entries' delivered at Cleveland, Ohio, May 1972; notes for the annual Trueman Lecture entitled 'The Future of the South Wales Coalfield', 28 April 1983; and notes for an address at the Coal Workshop in Cardiff on 5 Dec. 1997.

Printed items, Sept. 1885-Nov. 1980, acquired by Philip Weekes and relating to mining and particularly to the South Wales Coalfield, including a notice from James Colquhoun, for the 'Tredegar Iron & Coal Co., (Ld.)', to Messrs John & Wm Davies, requesting the payment of ground rent, 29 Sept. 1885; a copy of Abstract of the Coal Mines Regulation Acts, 1887 to 1896, and The Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1887, Special Rules, [1896]; and a copy of a flyer from the National Union of Mineworkers (South Wales Area) concerning a 'National Wages Ballot'. Miscellaneous papers,

Comprises miscellaneous printed and typescript items, 1911-1964, deriving from Philip Weekes's career in the coal industry or collected by him, including general material on the coal industry, the affairs of the National Union of Mineworkers, the National Coal Board, the Institution of Mining Engineers, the British Association of Colliery Management, the National Association of Colliery Managers. There is also a file recording details of professional visits to various collieries during 1957-58, with brief reports on each colliery. There are also a group of Philip Weekes's pay slips, 1945-50, and his membership card as an honorray member of the national Union of Mineworkers, September 1961.

Copies of draft minutes for meetings of the National Coal Board, Jan. 1981-Sept. 1983, in either duplicated or photocopied form, together with copies of a number of the annexes referred to in the minutes and some other material. Also included are a copy of minutes of a meeting of the Board, 6 Aug. 1971 (attached to those for 4 June 1982), and the minutes of a Special Meeting of Board Members, 10 May 1983.

Also included is a copy of a letter from Nigel Lawson, Secretary of State for Energy, to Sir Derek Ezra, Chairman of the National Coal Board, 8 June 1982.

Included are letters from David Lord Energlyn (1), John Morris QC MP (1), James Callaghan MP (2), Dafydd Wigley MP (1), and Denzil Davies MP (1), concerning various aspects of the coal industry in South Wales; letters from Roger Williams, National Coal Board Solicitor (2); and a telemessage from HRH Prince Charles the Prince of Wales, congratulating Philip Weekes on being awarded a CBE.

A small number of mainly published leaflets and booklets acquired by, or sent to, Philip Weekes, [c. 1976]-March 1988, generally in printed form with some covering letters, including a copy of the booklet Your project is coal, [c. 1976]; a copy of Celynen South, 1873-1985, The Tools are on the Bar: A brief history to commemorate the closure of the colliery, 1985; and a copy of 'Network': the newsletter of the P-E 'Fifty' Association, 2003, which includes an article entitled 'Philip Weekes & The NCB Assignment', published after Philip Weekes' death and presumably acquired by his widow, Mrs Branwen Weekes.

Manuscript working notes by Philip Weekes, covering the periods 19 Nov. 1973-8 March 1974, 25 Nov. 1974-13 Aug. 1975 and 24 May 1977-23 Jan. 1980. The volumes contain points for consideration or discussion at meetings; notes made during meetings; comments made by colleagues on various subjects; and some statistical information.

Exercise book and notebooks,

An exercise book (33 ff. of text), 1940, entitled 'Sinking' and marked 'Mining Department Cardiff University', containing extensive handwritten notes and sketches, presumably made during Philip Weekes' undergraduate course in mining engineering. A notebook (93 ff. of text), 1939-1949, containing handwritten notes made during his early career on operations at Pochin Colliery, July 1942-April 1943, together with a list showing time spent at various collieries and work done, July 1939-April 1943; as well as extensive notes apparently taken on a visit to German collieries, Jan.-Feb. 1949. A second notebook (39 ff. of text), 1966, containing rough notes apparently taken on a visit to the United States of America, Sept.-Oct. 1966.

Diaries,

Comprises a desk diary for 1979 kept intermittently by Philip Weekes with full details of his professional activities and engagements, mainly in the service of the National Coal Board. A few of the pages have been ripped out of the diary. There is also a large National Coal Board memorandum book bearing full intermittent entries by Philip Weekes for the period January 1981 until June 1985 relating mainly to his work for the National Coal Board and covering the period during the build-up to the 1984-85 miners' strike and its early months. The diary also contains stray manuscript notes, typescript memoranda, and cuttings from newspapers and journals. There is also a bound photocopy of the same diary for 1981-1985 and the additional material.
