Breconshire estate accounts, rentals, vouchers, etc

Accounts, rentals and vouchers of the Breconshire estates of Walter Pryse, Lewis Pryse and Edward Loveden Loveden, 1740-1826. The majority comprise bundles of accounts, usually incorporating the rentals, vouchers and sometimes relevant letters, mostly from the office of Edward (‘Ned’) Jones, agent for Edward Loveden Loveden, at Llandovery. Many of the accounts include the rectory of Llan-gors and a portion of the tithes, held by lease from the Dean and Chapter of Windsor, and repairs to Llan-gors church. The vouchers typically record payments into Child’s Bank, shares in the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal, and costs of properrty repairs.

Rental, abstracts of deeds, valuation, survey, etc.

Small notebook containing a rent roll of the Breconshire estate of Walter Pryse in the parishes of Llan-gors, Llangasty Tal-y-llyn, Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn and Llanfihangel Nant Bran, 1740. It also includes ‘Refferences’, comprising an abstract of the lease of Llan-gors House, 1723, a valuation of the lands and mill held by John Lewis of Cathedin in 1726; abstracts of deeds and leases naming properties belonging to the estate, including the manor of Trewallter Goch, 1703-1744; copy of a survey in 1653 of a fishing pool at Llan-gors called Llinsavathen, Mara Moto or Mara Blaen Llevenye; and a note on slaters’ work at Brecon.

Vouchers of George Morgan

Vouchers recording payments made by George Morgan on behalf of Edward Loveden Loveden, 1780, for solicitor’s expenses, augmentation of the vicarage of Llan-gors, land measurement, property repairs at Llan-gors Mill and elsewhere,, and other routine payments; also letters by Edward Jones of Llandovery about estate affairs and Radnorshire politics, and replies by Edward Loveden Loveden.

Letters to Lewis Pryse and Edward Loveden Loveden

A bundle comprising mainly letters, the first of which is to Lewis Pryse, from W. Bennett of Hartgrove about an account of furniture at Oxford University, 1769. Most of the file concerns the surveying, mapping and sale of the Breconshire estate of Edward Loveden Loveden. It includes valuations, 1779, 1805; letters from George Morgan of Brecon and Mathew Williams of Rhos Man, George Buckle of Chepstow, Samuel Sellwood of Abingdon, George Tennant, and Edward Jones of Llandovery, 1783-1807; accounts of leases and biddings, 1805; and the account for 1805-1813 of John Dent, trustee for Walter Pryse, compiled 1814. There is also a stray letter from Lord Milford of Picton Castle, Pembrokeshire, 1784., and a bill to Pryse Pryse, 1821.

Cardigan (Plas Dyffryn Llynan, etc. ,part of Llanstinan estate)

Title deeds and other documents, 1568-1744, relating to Plas Dyffryn Llynan, Cae Morgan and Blaenllyn in south Cardiganshire, part of the Llanstinan estate which Walter Pryse intended to purchase from John Symmons, testamentary devisee of William Wogan, in 1743. They include a mortgage by John ap Rees of Cardigan and Nicholas ap Rees, 1567/8; an agreement on behalf of William Jenkins of Blaen y pant for the sale to William Wogan and for discharge of a former mortgage to David Jenkins of Hensol, Glamorgan, 1680; leases by John Symmons, 1727-1740; a mortgage by John Symmons and Richard Noyes of the Middle Temple to James Phillips of Pentrepark, Pemb. of numerous properties in Llanstinan, Fishguard, Llanfair Nant-y-gof, Maenordeifi, St Dogmaels, Llantwyd, Cilgerran, Bridell, etc., Mwnt, Ferwig, Llangoedmor, Cardigan and Llandygwydd, and Llanddeusant, Carmarthenshire, 1728; legal papers from a case by Thomas Ubank and other creditors or legatees against John Symmons and Richard Noyes, with rentals, particulars, schedules, and letters to and from Walter Pryse, 1734-1744.

Leases by Deane Harrison of Coedmor, representing John Lewis, infant, of land in Tre-main, 1671; by Thomas Lewis of Coedmor, of a house and garden in the town of Cardigan, 1674; and by John Lewis of Hurst, of the corn mills of Melin Ganol and Melin Brithdir, the fulling mill of Melin Duless, Tir y Cappell, Castell Nadolig and other properties in Penbryn, Llangrannog and Troed-yr-aur, including Tir y Vynwent, 1712-1715.

Amroth, Crunwear, St Issells, Tenby, etc.

Title deeds for various houses and lands in Pembrokeshire, 1576-1766, including the Hill, Crunwear, 1576, Crunwear Cuckoestone, Redgoche and the Mountain Tenement or Bruniley, purchased by John Elliott of Narberth, 1637, and quitclaimed to Nicholas Lewes of St Issells, 1651; and East Trevaughan, Tenby, leased by Thomas Lloyd of Llanllawddog, 1655; and leases granted by Nicholas Lewes of Heane Castle, 1652, 1669, John Lewis of Coedmor and Hurst, 1685-1712, and Lewis Pryse of Abernantbychan, 1766, of properties in Saundersfoot, St Issells, Little Trevane, Upper Trevaughan, Tenby, Hopshill, Upper Trelissey, Amroth, and Castle Ditch in Pembroke (St Mary). These include a lease to Sir Hugh Owen of Landshipping, of the coal mines in St Issells, Begeli and Tenby, with a right to use the common loading place at Saundersfoot, and the Paddock, 1685.

Crunwear,, St Issells, Llanbedr Felffre and misc. Cardiganshire

Gift to David John ap Gwillim of Llangathen, Carmarthenshire, of two messuages called Ierwerthes Hyll and Sceland in St Issells, 1582; and five final concords of lands in Crunwear and Llanbedr Felffre in Pembrokeshire, and in Penbryn, Betws Ifan, Bron-gwyn, Blaenporth, Troedyaur, etc. in Cardiganshire, involving respectively Nicholas, John and James Lewes, members of the Griffith family and John Elliot, 1577-1641.

Amroth and Crunwear

A mortgage by Roger Griffithes of Amroth, 1625; deeds by Roger Griffithes and family, and by William Risam for the sale of The Hill and other property in Trenewydd, Crunwear, and the Lower House in Pendilo, Amroth, to Nicholas Lewis, 1629, 1636; and the pre-nuptial settlement of Thomas Davies of Ludcurch and Pressylla Chauncey of Narberth, comprising Llanteg, Milton, the mill, Ridgeman Hill and other properties in Crunwear, Ludchurch and Amroth, 1629.

Tenby (Trevane)

Leases of the tithes and of the messuage of Trevane, Tenby, made to James Vere of Jeffreston, later of Tenby (St Mary), respectively by Rev Edward Hughes, rector of Tenby, 1801, and by Edward Loveden Loveden in response to an order of the High Court of Chancery, 1806; assignments of both leases to Jacob Pinniger of Wotton Bassett, Wiltshire, 1808; a mortgage by him to Anthony Guy of Chippenham, 1826; and a surrender by the representatives of both mortgagor and mortgagee to Pryse Loveden of Buscot Park, Berkshire, 1851, with copies of relevant declarations, parish register entries and pedigrees relating to William Goldney of Clifton, Bristol, Anthony Guy of Hardenhuish, Wiltshire, the Pinniger family of Tockenham and Cliffe Pypard in Wiltshire, and of Bristol, and the Broome family of Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, 1778-1851.

Tenby (New Hedges Church of England School)

Draft conveyance by Pryse Loveden of Gogerddan to the rector and churchwardens of the parish of St Mary, Tenby, of a piece of land belonging to a farm called the Lodge for the erection of a school for the poorer classes in the parish and a schoolmaster’s house, 1852.

Lordship of Cilgerran and Pembroke Castle

Documents relating to the lordship of Cilgerran and to Pembroke Castle, 1482-1687. The first is an inspeximus of 1482 by William Lord Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, of an exemplification of a court roll of Humphrey Duke of Gloucester, dated 1420, recording an inquisition into the rights of the burgesses at Cilgerran. Other documents include an agreement by Nicholas Lewes for a demise in fee farm to David Parry of Noyadd [Trefawr], Cardiganshire, of the demesne lands of the lordship of Cilgerran, the Forest and other lands, 1632/3, an assignment to Nicholas Lewes of the perquisites of courts, waifs, strays, heriots, etc, 1640, and a bill of complaint in the High Court of Chancery by William Wogan against John Lewes, 1686/7. There is also a lease by Walter Guny of Wellstowne to Nicholas Lewes, of the Castle of Pembroke and the Castle Greene, otherwise Lewter Greene, 1661
