Aberystwyth title deeds

Title deeds for houses and burgages in the town of Aberystwyth, some of which mention street names still in existence and others which have changed or disappeared, 1332-1890. Many of the deeds refer to familiar landmarks in the town, such as the river Rheidol, the bridge and the castle. It is clear that several of the properties were acquired by Sir Richard Pryse (elder and younger) in the first half of the seventeenth century and leased by their successors over the next two centuries. Other prominent Aberystwyth families are named: Vachan (Vaughan), Phillips, Glays (Glais), Voya, Rogers, and Davies of Crigie. Witnesses to the early deeds include the constables and stewards of Aberystwyth castle, the coroner, bailiffs, mayor and other town officials. Two files concern a piece of land near the castle called the Conigree or Trwyngwningen and refer to the herring mise.

Aberystwyth (misc. properties)

Title deeds for various houses and burgages in the town of Aberystwyth, 1332-1657. Landmarks include the town cross, the river Rheidol, the bridge, the castle, the mill, Dinas Maylour, Sarne Pwll Budyr and Porth Tywyll. Properties include Y Tyddyn Dan y Dinas, Parcke yr Eithyn, Parcke Bache, Park y Helig Duon, Maes Glas, Tythin yr Hen Fagwyr, Gwayn Lladron and others. The earliest deeds record a quitclaim by Germyn Dryw to his son Roger Dryw and Matilda his wife, 1331/2; acquisitions by John Dyer, 1372, Philip and John, sons of John ap Gwilym Vechan, 1421, 1425; a mortgage by Robert Scuten and Elen his wife, 1397/8; and a bond by John Faunt of Glym Watir, Dublin, and several other Irish fishermen to John Vachan, 1430. Several deeds name Meredith Glays or Glais, David Glays and Henry Glais, 1444, 1448/9, 1450, 1460. Other deeds involve the families of Voya, Phillips and Rogers, 1481-1602, including William ap John Voya, 1488, 1533/4, Roger ap Richard, 1568, Richard Phyllips, 1572; and the will of William ap John Voya, 1539/40. There are marriage settlements of Rycharde Phelippes of Aberystwyth and Elen vch Morgan of Llanychaearn, 1568; of William ap Roger (Rogers) and Katteringe vch Mer'edd, comprising a mansion house, the Store House in Maesglas, etc., 1581-1582; and Richard ap David Lloyd and Tanglwyst vch Moris, 1609; and a gift in fee tail by Richard Phillipps to David Lewes of Gernos, and Gwenllian vch Thomas Parry his wife, and to Rees David Lloyd of Llanddeiniol and Anne vch Thomas Parry his wife, 1602. Further items comprise the probate of the will of David ap Harrye, 1559/60; acquisitions by Sir Richard Pryse and Dame Gwen Pryse, from Thomas Odinghells and John Collopp of London and others, 1593-1657; and a grant by Elizabeth I to James Lewis of lands previously possessed by Rice ap Griffith, attainted, 1593.

Aberystwyth (the Conigree and herring custom) and Dyffryn Clarach

Assignments of demises originally made by Elizabeth I in 1593 and James I in 1607 and 1616/17, of the herring custom calles prise maes, otherwise castle maes, and a piece of land called the Conygre or Conigree on the north side of Aberystwyth Castle, together with a meadow in Dyffryn Clarach, to Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1594, 1608, and to Hector Phillipps of Gibbyland, Cardiganshire, and Thomas Lewes of Gelli Dywyll, Carmarthenshire, 1632. Previous asignees included Richard Awbrey the younger and Richard Budd of London.

Aberystwyth (Vagwyren)

A feoffment by James Harry to Raignold Vaughan, 1614, of a burgage called Vagwyren lying between Heol y Bont and Maes Glas, and a subsequent deed of sale to Thomas Rees of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1627.

Aberystwyth (Bridge Street or Heol y Bont)

Title deeds for houses in Bridge Street, Aberystwyth, 1767-1838, including deeds of sale by Thomas Lloyd of Aberystwyth and his wife, Elinor, to John Davies of Crygie in the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1770; a copy of the will of John Davies, 1784; a mortgage by David Davies of Crygie and Mary, his wife, to Charles Mitchell of Aberaeron, 1831, followed by an assignment by the mortgagors and David Davies, of the Bridge End House, Aberaeron, executor of Charles Mitchell, to James Morice of Carrog, Landdeiniol, 1838; and a lease by the Pryse family trustees to Matthew Henry Davis, ironmonger, 1855.

Aberystwyth (Misc. deeds)

Miscellaneous deeds relating to Aberystwyth, comprising the copy will of Anne Jones (previously of Penbryn), 1785; and a release by Evan Edwards of the Laurels and William Williams of Bronheulog to Sir Pryse Pryse, of a right of road claimed over part of a close called Caergog adjoining St Davids Road. Incorporates a coloured plan, 1890.

Aberystwyth (The Conigree)

Lease by Margaret Pryse of Woodstock to John Probert of Copthorn, Salop, of a piece of land called the Conigree or Trwyngwningen on the north side of Aberystwyth Castle, 1793; and correspondence mainly between the Gogerddan agent, John Graham Williams, the Commissioner of Woods, etc. and the solicitors Boys and Tweedie, concerning the claim to the Conigree by the trustees of Pryse Loveden, deceased, with extracts of relevant deeds and rent roll, declarations of witnesses. Includes a map.

Aberystwyth (Morfa Swnd and Morfa Mawr)

Title deeds and papers relating to Morfa Mawr and Morfa Swnd, part of the waste land of Llanbardarn Fawr, comprising a licence and certificate by Aberystwyth Corporation to approve portions to Pryse Pryse for enclosure, 1813-1814, preceded by a case and opinion of Mr Serjeant Williams on the right and title of the Corporation, following a previous grant of land in Trefechan to Edward Locke, 1808; and a lease by Pryse Pryse, with a plan in the margin, 1838.

Aberystwyth (misc. leases and agreements)

Leases and agreements by Pryse Pryse for a parcel of ground near Pontcorry Bridge, 1823, a surrender of lease and removal of fixtures by David Pritchard, 1826, an extension to the Gogerddan Arms or Lion Hotel, 1874, and memorandum of a building lease to James Williams in Caradoc Road, 1881.

Aberystwyth (Our Lady’s Mill)

Abstract of the title of Pryse Pryse to Our Lady’s Mill, Aberystwyth, marked ‘Woodstock Papers’ (watermark 1827); and a grant by the Commissioner of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues to the trustees of Pryse Pryse of the fee farm rents of Our Lady’s Mill, lands in Dyffryn Clarach, the manors of East and West Pembroke and the lordship of Cilgerran, 1863.

Aberystwyth (Bridge Street or Heol y Bont)

Title deeds for houses and burgages mainly in Bridge Street, Aberystwyth, 1417-1840. One deed includes Cross Street, 1575. Boundary clauses mention Maesglas Common and Gerddi Gleison. The earliest deeds record acquisitions by John ap G’li ap Y Bongam, 1417, Lli'n ap Howell Dduy, 1432, William ap John Voya and Goleubryd his wife, 1438/9, and David ap Gr ap Mab Coch Creyth, 1441; a mortgage by Jankyn ap John ap Gutto Vachan, 1465; and a gift by John Glayse, 1484/5. Named properties include Ty D'd Saies, quitclaimed by John Wogan of Wiston to Maurice ap John ap Ridderch of Llanychaearn, 1561, and Tomen Vaure, sold by Henry Phillips to Gruffith Roger, 1609. Further items include a deed of sale by Thomas Phillippes to Thomas Rice of Penglais, 1625/6; a letter of attorney by John Rees (bedridden) 1642, followed by a sale by Richard Rice to James Johnes of Dolaucothi, 1656; and purchases and mortgages by Richard Phillips, 1564, 1586, William ap Morice. 1575, Richard ap Roger, 1594-1595, Thomas Phillips and his son Phabian, 1623, and John Rice, 1627. Later deeds concern houses purchased by John Davies of Crigie, 1770, then sold by James Morice of Wallog (mortgagee of David Davies) to Pryse Pryse the elder, 1840, with an abstract of title, 1770-1819; and Margaret Pryse of Woodstock, 1784-178[6].

Baker Street: a conveyance by Ho'll ap D'd ap L'ln, steward, and other town officials to Ll'n ap Gr' ap Ho' ap M'red of a burgage which D'd ap M'red Glays gave to the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 1489. Title deeds for houses and burgages situated in or bordered by Great Darkgate Street (Heol y Porth Towyll), otherwise called the High Street or Broad Street, Aberystwyth, 1455-1785. Boundaries include the town wall, Lurkers Lane and Shoemakers’ Row. Aberystwyth (Pier Street or Heol y Wig)

itle deeds for houses and burgages in Heol y Wig, later called Pier Street, Aberystwyth, 1465-1855. Boundaries include Baker Street on the west. Items of interest include a gift by letters patent of Arthur, eldest son of Henry VII, prince of Wales, to David Goch Ove (or Offe) and Duthguy his wife, 1491; and a detailed deed of partition between William John Bona and Margaret vch Hugh ap John, mentioning a winch, 1527. Other deeds record acquisitions by John
Vwya ap Jankyn ap John ap Gwillym Vaghan, 1465, William Morys, 1554/5, Richard William Roger, 1601/2, and Maurice Llewelyn, 1608. The file also contains mortgages by Richard Phillips of the New House, 1594, sold by Henry Phellippes to Sir Richard Pryse in 1609, and three burgages, 1598, assigned to Sir Richard Pryse in 1604/5; a mortgage of Ty David Lloyd William to Sir Richard Pryse, 1622; the pre-nuptial settlement of John William of Aberystwyth and Susanna John David of Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, 1677; a lease by Thomas Pryse, 1743; and leases by Pryse Loveden and his trustees, mentioning specific shops and the houses recently erected on the plots leased, 1852, 1855.

Aberystwyth (Gwern Ladron)

Original bundle comprising a quitclaim of land called Gwern Ladron by John Lewys, son and heir of Lewys ap Moris of Aberystwyth, to Davit ap John alias David Saer, 1545, and a gift to William David ap John, otherwise William David Saer, with further quitclaim and bond, 1577.

Aberystwyth (Trefechan)

Tile deeds mainly for burgages in Trefechan, Aberystwyth, 1566-1819. Boundaries include the highway and the river Rheidol. The earliest deeds record acquisitions by Ieuan ap David ap Moris, 1565/6, Richard ap John Vaughan, 1598, and James John, 1655. Susbsequent documents comprise the wills of two individuals called Richard James, 1685, 1688, each devising burgages to their cousins, both called John Lewis, followed by a feoffment by one John Lewis to John Herbert of Gogerddan [1685x1688]; and the wills of the two individuals called John Lewis, devising their properties respectively to Edward Pryse of Gogerddan, 1694, and to Lewis Pryse, 1713. There is also a lease by Sir Pryse Pryse of a lime kiln and yard at Trefechan, 1819.
