John, second marquis of Bute, died on 18 March 1848. The Glamorgan estates immediately came under the control of the executors of his will and the trustees of John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, the infant third marquis, as exemplified by Edward Priest Richards, who closes his account with Lord Bute and opens an account with the executors and trustees during the course of the day's business (A3/23). The third Marquis came of age in Sept. 1868 but, rather than manage the estate personally, he chose to allow the trust to continue to manage the estate on his behalf. The trust was finally wound up in 1902 having fulfilled the duties laid upon it by the will of the second marquis. The trustees' minute book is the record of the meetings and decisions of the executors and trustees during the early days of the trust. It also contains copies of letters sent.

Survey of the lands of William Herbert, kt, dec., in the lordships or manors of Dinas Powys, Cogan, Llandough, Roath, Kibbor, Cardiff, Beganston, Candleston, South Corneli, and Newton Nottage, in t. and p. Swansea, in p's Ilston, Pen-maen, Pen-rhys, Llangyfelach, Llangennith, Rhosili, Llanrhidian, Cheriton, Oystermouth, Bishopston, Penarth and Llandenni, in Cilfai and in the rectories of Cadoxton juxta Neath, Llan-giwg, Swansea, and Oystermouth.

The writing is faint, and the cover is illegible, with the exception of 'Manor of [?Colwinston]' and a later endorsement of '1634'. The manor is not named in the presentment, but there is reference to Brocastle Farm (320 a.), to pleadings 'in the court of the said manor or in Ogmore Court', to a common (80 a.) called 'the Golden M[ile?]', and to Morgan Morgan, clerk, the present incumbent, presented by Sir Edward Mansell, bart, and John Carne, esq., in right of their wives, the undoubted patrons 'unless the Lady of the said Manor Dame Lady Martha Bassette the relict of Edward Carne Esq late Lord of the said Manor hath right ...'.
