Part of Nassau Senior papers
Journal containing holograph notes on Nassau William Senior's visit to Haddo, Scotland, 8-16 September 1856. It includes lengthy conversations with Lord Aberdeen; Arthur Gordon (1829-1912); John Bright (1811-89); Lord Haddo (1816-64); and Sir James Alexander Gordon (1782-1869). There are conversations on various aspects of British and European politics, including: Parliamentary reform; Puseyites; the French alliance; the Government's treatment of the Irish and the Scots; Maynooth; India; the Crimean War and its repercussions for Europe; and Bright's proposed system of government. There are many comments on a number of notable figures, including: Pitt, Wilberforce, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Gladstone, Lord Liverpool, Wellington, Sir Walter Scott, Thiers, et al. On f. 2 is written: 'It is requested that no part of this journal be copied, or be seen by any but, very trustworthy persons. NWS'.
