Haddo, Scotland, journal

Journal containing holograph notes on Nassau William Senior's visit to Haddo, Scotland, 8-16 September 1856. It includes lengthy conversations with Lord Aberdeen; Arthur Gordon (1829-1912); John Bright (1811-89); Lord Haddo (1816-64); and Sir James Alexander Gordon (1782-1869). There are conversations on various aspects of British and European politics, including: Parliamentary reform; Puseyites; the French alliance; the Government's treatment of the Irish and the Scots; Maynooth; India; the Crimean War and its repercussions for Europe; and Bright's proposed system of government. There are many comments on a number of notable figures, including: Pitt, Wilberforce, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Gladstone, Lord Liverpool, Wellington, Sir Walter Scott, Thiers, et al. Discussions relate mainly to the social, economic and political problems of Ireland, with particular emphasis being paid to: the Poor Law; the Irish Constabulary; religion; education; RC universities; the Phoenix society; Communism; and the Irish language. There are also conversations on astronomy.
