Memoranda and notes,

Typescript memoranda, briefs and other papers, March 1962-July 1982, either in duplicated, xeroxed, or photocopied form, together with some handwritten notes, covering such issues as coal reserves and exploration; the economic case for coal over oil; the Prince of Wales' visit to St John's Colliery in May 1974; unprofitable collieries and colliery closures; and relations between government and the nationalised industries.

General notebooks,

Manuscript working notes by Philip Weekes, covering the periods 19 Nov. 1973-8 March 1974, 25 Nov. 1974-13 Aug. 1975 and 24 May 1977-23 Jan. 1980. The volumes contain points for consideration or discussion at meetings; notes made during meetings; comments made by colleagues on various subjects; and some statistical information.

Diaries,

Comprises a desk diary for 1979 kept intermittently by Philip Weekes with full details of his professional activities and engagements, mainly in the service of the National Coal Board. A few of the pages have been ripped out of the diary. There is also a large National Coal Board memorandum book bearing full intermittent entries by Philip Weekes for the period January 1981 until June 1985 relating mainly to his work for the National Coal Board and covering the period during the build-up to the 1984-85 miners' strike and its early months. The diary also contains stray manuscript notes, typescript memoranda, and cuttings from newspapers and journals. There is also a bound photocopy of the same diary for 1981-1985 and the additional material.

Papers, 1939-[c. 2000], largely connected with Philip Weekes' work in the coal industry, consisting of letters and correspondence, 1951-[c. 2000]; papers concerning the Broadcasting Council for Wales, 1976-1982; a number of notes for speeches and lectures, 1953-1997; copies of various addresses and articles, 1954-1992; an exercise book and two notebooks, 1939-1966; miscellaneous papers, 1911-1964, deriving from Philip Weekes's career; papers concerning the coal industry, 1920-1962; printed materials, 1927-1972; papers, 1939-1945, concerning Philip Weekes's connection with the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company; and notebooks which he kept while a student at University College, Cardiff, 1939-1945.

Typescript and manuscript letters received by Philip Weekes, Sept. 1951- Aug. 1983, together with a number of carbon copies and photocopies of replies sent, as well as a few handwritten notes and some other material. Included are letters from Trevor H. H. Skeet MP (5), concerning the Parliamentary All-Party Mineral Group; and letters from Neil Kinnock MP (1) and Roy Hughes MP (1), regarding investment in the coal industry.

Handwritten and typescript notes for speeches and lectures made by Philip Weekes, Feb. 1953-Dec. 1997, together with some printed programmes and other material, including a copy of a paper entitled 'Progress in Support of Gate Entries' delivered at Cleveland, Ohio, May 1972; notes for the annual Trueman Lecture entitled 'The Future of the South Wales Coalfield', 28 April 1983; and notes for an address at the Coal Workshop in Cardiff on 5 Dec. 1997.

Copies of addresses and articles written by Philip Weekes, Feb. 1954-Oct. 1992, mainly in published form but with some handwritten and typescript drafts, including a copy of a paper entitled 'Meeting the Challenge through Longwall Retreating', 20 Jan. 1971; and copies of an 'Address by Mr Philip Weekes, Area Director (South Wales) of The National Coal Board on Wednesday February 9 1983, on The Problems of The South Wales Coalfield', given to the Parliamentary All-Party Mineral Group.

Miscellaneous papers,

Comprises miscellaneous printed and typescript items, 1911-1964, deriving from Philip Weekes's career in the coal industry or collected by him, including general material on the coal industry, the affairs of the National Union of Mineworkers, the National Coal Board, the Institution of Mining Engineers, the British Association of Colliery Management, the National Association of Colliery Managers. There is also a file recording details of professional visits to various collieries during 1957-58, with brief reports on each colliery. There are also a group of Philip Weekes's pay slips, 1945-50, and his membership card as an honorray member of the national Union of Mineworkers, September 1961.

A small number of mainly published leaflets and booklets acquired by, or sent to, Philip Weekes, [c. 1976]-March 1988, generally in printed form with some covering letters, including a copy of the booklet Your project is coal, [c. 1976]; a copy of Celynen South, 1873-1985, The Tools are on the Bar: A brief history to commemorate the closure of the colliery, 1985; and a copy of 'Network': the newsletter of the P-E 'Fifty' Association, 2003, which includes an article entitled 'Philip Weekes & The NCB Assignment', published after Philip Weekes' death and presumably acquired by his widow, Mrs Branwen Weekes.

Newspaper and magazine cuttings, Sept. 1985-Jan. 2002, some in photocopied form, one or two of which contain interviews with, or quotes by, Philip Weekes, including items covering topics such as assessing the situation in South Wales following the 1985-86 strike, Feb. 1986; the workers buy-out of Tower Colliery, Nov. 1997; and an obituary for Sir Norman Siddall, Jan. 2002.

Cuttings on the Aberfan disaster,

The file comprises various newspaper and magazine cuttings, [Oct.] 1966-Dec. 1967, some in photocopied form, concerning the disaster at Aberfan on 21 October 1966, including cuttings regarding the subsequent public inquiry at Merthyr Tydfil, as reported in both the national and local press, as well as articles from the Colliery Guardian. Also included are some pages from a glossy magazine showing pictures of the scene immediately following the tragedy.

Collected historical documents,

A number of historical documents, 1849-1980, acquired by Philip Weekes relating to mining and the South Wales Coalfield, consisting of a single title deed, 1860; several printed documents, 1885-1980; and some copy documents, [?1970x?1999], the originals of which date between 1849-1976.

Copies of draft minutes for meetings of the National Coal Board, Jan. 1981-Sept. 1983, in either duplicated or photocopied form, together with copies of a number of the annexes referred to in the minutes and some other material. Also included are a copy of minutes of a meeting of the Board, 6 Aug. 1971 (attached to those for 4 June 1982), and the minutes of a Special Meeting of Board Members, 10 May 1983.

Coal industry,

Miscellaneous papers accumulated by Philip Weekes relating to the coal industry in south Wales, including a few letters relating to his studies at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and the Universal Mining School at Cardiff, the Tredegar Workmen's Institute Society, his work for the Ministry of Fuel and Power, and a BBC television programme on the miner to which Mr Weekes contributed in 1961.

Newspaper cuttings, May 1974, concerning the visit of HRH The Prince of Wales to St John's Colliery at Maesteg on 24 May 1974. Mainly consisting of cuttings giving a brief account of the Prince's visit as reported in both the national and local press at the time.
