A small collection of material of miscellaneous interest acquired by Mr William Griffiths, formerly of Foyle's Bookshop in London, including a letter to him from Nikolai Tolstoy, 1960, and a letter from John Thomas, harpist to Queen Victoria, 1875, and from the soprano Edith Wynne.
Includes five photographs numbered 6394997/1-5 - a studio portrait of German classical scholar, historian, jurist, journalist, politician & archaeologist Theodor Mommsen by Giacomo Brogi, Firenze; two cartes de visite (cdv) of George Eliot by The London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company; a cdv of 'Gladsone & Grandson'; one cdv titled '14 views of Beddgelert' by Francis Bedford.

A small collection of material of Lloyd George interest acquired by Mr William Griffiths, formerly of Foyle's Bookshop in London. It includes a framed photograph of Lloyd George taken in c. 1939-1940, together with a photograph of him as a young politician by John Thomas, c. 1896 (6394992/2), and a family group photograph taken at the same time and including Dame Margaret, three of the Lloyd George children, D. R. Daniel and John Herbert Lewis (6394992/3). There are two letters from Lloyd George to Daniel, dated 1902 and relating to the Penrhyn Quarry dispute and a note from Asquith, dated 1903. A group of letters to William Griffiths, mainly concerning publication matters, include letters from A. J. Sylvester, 1937-1940; Frances Stevenson, later Lady Lloyd-George, 1939 and 1950; Dame Margaret Lloyd George, 1940, and Major Gwilym Lloyd-George, 1945. Photocopies of official documents held by the Public Record Office relating to Lt Col. Emil Carl Haag of Carmarthen, who served with the 18th Hussars on the North-West Frontier of India with the Tochi Field Force and in the Tirah expedition. He served also through the South African War, being present at the defence of Ladysmith, and was wounded and mentioned three times in dispatches. Later he joined the South African Constabulary, and was in the Imperial Yeomanry. He served in the Great War with the South Wales Mounted Brigade. Articles relating to him were published in the Carmarthenshire Antiquary, volumes xxxv (1999), xxxvii (2001) and xlvi (2010).

A volume originally used as a parish register, 1727-30, of Ystradfellte, co. Brecon (inverted text ff. 23-4 verso); and subsequently for a summary catalogue of the library of Ystradmeurig School, co. Cardigan, compiled in 1827 by Henry Hampton (ff. 1-19), with a few later memoranda. The titles, arranged under broad subject-headings, comprise mainly the works of classical authors and books on theology and religion, history, and languages, including some in Welsh. Also included (f. 22) is a petition, 1829, of the inhabitants of Ystradmeurig against Roman Catholic emancipation, in the hand of John Williams Morris, headmaster of the school, 1826-59.

Charles Letts's Office Desk Diary, 1936, with detailed entries, apparently in the hand of John Reginald Jones (d. 1964), in which he records the daily occurrences and problems he encountered as manager of Varteg Hill Colliery, Garndiffaith, co. Monmouth [owned by John Vipond & Co. Ltd]; included are references to the fears and unrest of the labour-force because of dangerous and adverse working conditions, and accounts of the writer's confrontations with individual miners.

Highway rate receipt and payment book, 1887-90, for the parish of Llangathen, co. Carmarthen.

A ledger used originally to record the accounts, 1852-3, of Ochr y Foel Lead Mine, probably in Gwernafield, co. Flint (pp. 1-47), and later the accounts, 1869-74, of Griffith Edwards, shipowner and auctioneer, and Jane Edwards, coal dealer, Barmouth, co. Merioneth (pp. 48-228 passim). The volume was finally used by Lucy Mary Morris (d. 1958), and her daughter Lucy Irene Morris (d. 1971), Porthmadog, co. Caernarfon, to record their finances, 1911-70, including share dividend and income tax returns (pp. 58-153 passim, pp. 259-74). An index is included at the beginning of the volume.

Some fourteen letters, 1923-1950 (mostly 1923-1924), from Vernon Watkins to his schoolfriend, Eric V. Falk, chiefly concerned with life at Repton School and the poet's unhappiness after leaving, including two apparently unpublished poems (ff. 14-15); together with two further letters to Falk, 1923, one being from Graham B. Smith, history master at Repton, the 'Mr Holmes' of Christopher Isherwood's Lions and Shadows (London, 1938).

Eleven letters, 1854-1902, some incomplete, from Sir Llewelyn Turner (1823-1903), Parkia, Llanfair-is-gaer, co. Caernarfon, to John Breese (1830-58), town clerk of Pwllheli, and to 'Mr Wynn' [possibly Frederick George Wynn, Glynllifon, co. Caernarfon], relating mainly to the maintenance of Caernarfon Castle and harbour, and to the Royal Welsh Yacht Club.

An album compiled, ca. 1973-1988, by Margaret Joan Mills (formerly Baylis, d. 1992), containing pedigrees, photographs, copies of civil registration certificates and wills, and other genealogical memoranda, 1729-1988, concerning various branches of the Makeig family, originally from the parish of Llandygwydd, co. Cardigan; together with press cuttings and notes relating to her research.

Notes, 1923, in Welsh, by E. Thomas, on the history of Dock Chapel, the Congregational church at New Dock, Llanelli, co. Carmarthen, 1855-1923.

Letters, 1942-75, to Graham F. Thomas who stood unsuccessfully as a Labour Party candidate for the Monmouth constituency in the 1950 general election, before spending some years working as a civil servant in the Sudan and Kenya. The letters relate mainly to his political interests and are from George M. Ll. Davies (6) 1943-4, James Griffiths, MP (93) 1946-75, Hilary A. Marquand, MP (69) 1945-69, Iorwerth C. Peate (28) 1942-69, and Professor William Rees (3) 1953-5.

Dyddiadur y Methodistiaid Wesleyaidd ... 1891, containing entries, in Welsh, by Owen Thomas, ?Tre-garth, parish of Llandygái, co. Caernarfon, mainly comprising reflections on his spiritual condition, and including (p. 36) a reference to his fellow-workers ('fy nghyd-weithwyr') at the Penrhyn slate quarry.

Original manuscript of the Welsh text of Saunders Lewis's address to the jury during his trial at Caernarfon Assizes, October 1936, for arson at the Penyberth Bombing School. The Welsh text, described by Saunders Lewis as 'partly strict translation but in part a separate and different composition' (see NLW MS 22951C, f. i), was subsequently published as a pamphlet Paham y Llosgasom yr Ysgol Fomio (1936).

A wages account book of the Margam estate [co. Glamorgan], recording wages paid to artificers, hauliers, and labourers employed on the demesne and other places on the estate, and to persons employed in the kitchen garden, pleasure grounds, and nursery at Margam, August 1851 - February 1856.

A composite volume consisting (previous to re-binding) of loose leaves and sections of notebooks, sewn together between rough, brown, paper covers, and containing an imperfect register [of students at the school or academy at Neuadd-lwyd, near Aberaeron], 1821-1830, and 1833-1837. The name of Thomas Phillips occurs on the original, inside, upper cover, and the inscription 'Revd. T. Phillips, Neuaddlwyd, near Lampeter, Cardiganshire', on the original, outside, lower cover. This is presumably the Reverend Thomas Phillips, Congregational minister at Neuadd-lwyd, and master of the school there from its foundation in 1810 until 1840. The sections are not in chronological order, entries for 1821-1822 being at the end of the volume.

Gwynn Jones in his review of O Gors y Bryniau (see above) on the author's use of dialect (11 Mehefin 1925); and adjudications on 'englynion' submitted in a literary competition organised by Y Darian (28 Rhagfyr 1922), on the 'rhieingerddi' and 'myfyrdraethau' submitted for competition at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, 1923 (16 Awst 1923; for the adjudication on the 'rhieingerddi', see also Cofnodion a Chyfansoddiadau Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1923 . . . A volume entitled on the cover 'Cylchlythyrau Cymdeithasfa Chwarterol y Methodistiaid Calfinaidd yn Ne Cymru', being a bound volume of reports (printed) of the quarterly meetings of the Calvinistic Methodist Association of South Wales held at the following places - Carmarthen (April 1936), Newport (June 1936), Aberafan (September 1936), Pontardawe (November 1936), Penarth (April 1937), Y Garn (June 1937), Tonpentre (September 1937), Tregaron (November 1937), Brecon (March 1938), Llandeilo (June 1938), Haverfordwest (August-September 1938), and London (November 1938). The reports bear the signatures of officials of the Association.
