Letter from Shuja al-Daulah, Safdarjang to Clive.

Thank you very much for your letter of the 12th of Rabi al-Avval, delivered to me by Captain Dokaral [Douglas?] on the 28th of Rabi al-Avval, regreting the delay in my arrival in Allahabad and also informing me that you are intending to return to England; perhaps you would consider delaying your departure. As the company officials had appointed you to lead all the expeditions we are wondering who will be appointed to replace you. If it is Colonel Barker who takes over we know that he would come to my help whenever I need him. General Carnic John Bahadur [Carnac] is leaving as well but he would also be able to come to my resecue if I needed him. -- I have already replied to you about some of the issues mentioned in your letter. The delay in reaching Allahabad was because of a physical condition and I was unable to undertake this journey.

Letter from Shuja al-Daulah Safdarjang to Clive.

During the period that I took leave of you and returned to Faizabad I sent a number of letters to you but have not received any reply. I had earlier written to you that your messengers had informed me that the news reports and letters from here are received at Calcutta promptly and punctually. In case, during this period, the news reports do not convey to you some important news what is the guarantee that letters carrying important news reach you in time? It is necessary that you instruct the Darogha of post at your end that he should personally take the responsibility to collect and deliver all news reports and letters to you. -- I have already sent you an account of the Marhattas. In reply to the letter which I had written to Navab Ahmad Khan he has replied that he agrees with you but he points out that the distance between him and the Marhattas is more than four Karohs and there is no fort in between for protection and the English army is too far away. By the time they receive the news and reach there to help the situation will have gone out of control. Hafiz Rahmat Khan is facing the same dilemma because Navab Najib al-Daulah is in Najibabad. In this case it is better that you assign four, five or six battalions of your army for this campaign and at the same time that you instruct your commanders at Allahabad that if they receive any order from me regarding the Marhattas they should consider it as coming from you and act on it immediately. -- Enclosure: -- The latest news received from the fort of Chinar/Janalah is not very good. There is hardly any pieces of artillery left and most of the parapet, walls, etc. have been destroyed. It will take some time before I would be able to attend to it. I did not get any opportunity duing the past three or four years to go there. Your army has brought down seven cannons from the parapet and taken.them to Kama Kotah; they want to take them away to some other fort. As the Marhattas forces are approaching and our artillery is not in a good state I would appeciate if you could ask your commanders to return these cannons for the protection of the original fort.

Letter from Shuja al-Daulah Safdarjang to Clive.

In my previous letters I gave you an account of the troubles created in this area by the wretched Qasim with the instigation of the Rohillas. I also sent you letters of Hafiz Rahmat Khan and Mukarram Khan which would have given you further details of the troubles created by him. As he regards my English friends and I as one and the same thing he is planning to invade Bengal after he has taken over this area.

Letter from Shitab Rai,

Thank your for your letter of 25 Muharram complaining that you have not received any reply to your last two letters. The Nawab Sahib, before leaving for Calcutta, had given all -- The testimonials, which Nawab Wazir had sent more than a month ago with his letter, did not carry his official seal. Moreover, these documents did not have your full titles and honors listed. These were, therefore, returned for amendments and corrections. We received the corrected documents and testimonials from the Nawab Wazir through Jagat Seths on 10 Safar, reg.yr. 5. Knowing very well the Nawab's concern for these documents I am holding these until his returns. It is essential that we keep all correspondence relating to this affair very secret and letters are sent in secure bags and by trusted messengers. Shitab Rai.

Letter from Shitab Rai,

Whatever intelligence reports I have received from the capital until today were handed over to Mr Amyatt to be passed on to you. I hope you have read all these reports. In the letters sent from the capital on 6 Jumada II, reg.yr. 5 it is written that Jankuji Marhatta was causing trouble near the capital and had invaded the capital on 26 Jumada I, reg.yr. 5. The Nawab Wazir sent his army and his sardars and as a result there was a great battle fought between the two forces. In addition to a large number of people who were killed or injured a number of high-ranking Marhatta Sardars were also killed. At the end, the Marhattas could not face the enemy and fled from the battlefield. They were chased to their tents and at the end had to negotiate the terms of a truce. It was agreed that the Marhattas will offer ten Lac rupees out of which three Lacs will be given to Rajah Ram Prashad and seven Lacs to Najib Khan Rohila. After this decision, Jankuji Marhatta marched towards Lahore. On 3 Jumada II, reg.yr. 5 he encamped near Barnalah, a distance of 12 Karoh from Lahore. Rajah Daler Singh accompanied him until four manzils. As soon as the Nawab Vazir and the Emperor get a respite from the Marhattas, they divert their attention towards the troubles caused by Prince Ali Gohar. This is a fact. The messengers of the Prince intercepted the letters of Nawab Wazir, which were sent to you. Meanwhile if any of the messengers manages to escape and comes here with letters I will pass them on to you. Whatever letters I have been receiving for you so far have been dispatched to you promptly. -- It is reported that the Prince with Muhammad Quli Khan Bahadur and a force of seven to eight thousand cavalry has crossed the Ganges near Benares and wants to come to Azimabad. Maharajah Ram Narayan wants to come out on Thursday. I will be accompanying him with my force. another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/9, item no. 363.

Letter from Shitab Rai,

Thank you for your letter informing that you have written to Mr Amyatt that he should try to work with my agreement and should not interfere in my work as well as informing me that copies of the letters from Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik have been sent to Nawab Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan Bahadur and he has written that he has asked Rasikh Jang Bahadur and Amir Quli Khan Bahadur to come and see him and will be able to send a reply after consulting with them. I am sure whatever the Nawab will write in reply will be according to your wishes. I have always respected the wishes of the Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik and in return he has always shown great consideration towards me. Recently, you have sent your replies to letters you had received from Umdat al-Mumalik Maharajah Sahib. I have passed these on to him with my own comments. I would like to suggest that you add one or two sentences to our reply to the sent letter received from the Nawab Sahib. I also suggest that you send your good wishes on the festival of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to the Nawab with a nuzr of some gold ashrafis. Letter from Shitab Rai,

I have received two letters from Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik Bahadur. The first one was addressed to me and the other to Nawab Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan Bahadur Mahabatjang. I have sent the latter to you through Mr Amhurst and I hope this may have been received by now and may have revealed to you the true nature of the situation. Meanwhile, I am sending one of my servant, Muhammad Haka who will be with you shortly. He will be able to proceed to Mir Jafar Khan Bahadur after receiving a parvanah from you. Letter from Shitab Rai,

Received your letter of 17 Safar, reg.yr. 5 informing that on 16 Muharram you sent a reply to Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik's letter as well as letters to Umdat al-Mulk Maharajah Thakur Mall and others and that you hoped they have been received by the addressees. You had received another letter from the Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik but was not able to reply to him because of other engagements. These letter were received by me on 9 Rabi` I and were despatched by my own messengers to the Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik Bahadur, Umdat al-Mulk Maharajah Thakur Mall Bahadur, Rajah Daler Singh and Muhammad Sulaiman Khan Bahadur. I have written to the Rajah that he should deliver your letter to Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik in private and at the same time get a reply from him and send it to me. I will send this to you without any delay. Meanwhile, if you are writing a reply to Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik's other letter, kindly mention that before taking any decisions he should consult Mr Amherst Sahib. I always perform my duties with dedication and faithfulness and do not receive any orders from anyone but you. Earlier I had informed you about the parwanah issued by Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan with his own seal to Rajah Ram Narayan accusing him of interfering in the administration and revenue collection of Shahjahanpore, and Bhimpore, etc., and how the difficulties of the Rajah were resolved. Before this I had informed you about Khvajah Muhammadi Khan who forseven years was administrator of Nawab Samsam al-Daulah's estate and used to pay the dues of the sarkar. I am sure you may have liked that account.

Letter from Shitab Rai,

Refers to an exchange of correspondence between Peter Amyatt, William Watts, Ramnarayan, Vazir al-Mamalik and the Jagat Seth Mahtab Rai dating back over a month to 27 Safar [i.e. 30 October 1758] and to 21 Rabi` al-Awwal [i.e. 22 November 1758], as well as affairs in Murshidabad and Calcutta. œA contemporary translation is CC2/5/185.

Shitab Rai.

Letter from Shitab Rai,

Thank you for your letter. A reply to Nawab Wazir's letter he had sent to you is long overdue. He has sent me another reminder. In the past I had enquired through Mr Amhurst[?Amherst] whether he had sent Nawab Wazir's letter to Nawab Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan and the Nawab Vazir had, in reply, written to him that he would be able to answer his letter only after he had received advice and a draft of a reply and had shown this draft to Mr Watts. As we do not know whether he has received the corrected version of this draft or not it will be a waste of time to send him a reply. At the same time I have received letters from the capital dated 16 Rabi` I. In it is written that the Emperor and the Wazir al-Mumalik are returning back to the capital, after their conquests and annihilation of the rebel forces of the district. They will reach the capital in two or three days. In the post- bag I have received from you today one letter addressed to Nawab Vazir and the second to Maharajah Umdat al-Mulk Rajah Nagar Mal Bahadur and the third to Muhammad Sulaiman Khan Bahadur and the fourth to brother Daler Singh Bahadur. These were all presented to His Highness who cannot send a reply at present as he is travelling with his army. In two to four days he will be able to send a reply to the letter of Muhammad Sulaiman Khan who is a courtier of Nawb Wazir al-Mumalik. You will be seeing it soon. It will be good to send him a friendly reply. I have received two letters from Nawab Wazir al-Mumalik, one addressed to you and the other addressed to Mir Muhammad Jafar regarding the case of the state of Nawab Samsam al-Daulah which you had sent him. You may keep the letter addressed to you and the other you may send the one addressed to Nawab Sahib to him, asking him to seek the help of Khvajah Muhammadi Khan and to write to Rajah Ram Narayan that he should withdraw his claim on Malda. His Highness has asked me to stress this strongly. There has been quite a lot of rumours that Abadli was coming but these all turned out be not true. The Marhattas are busy in rampaging the Capital. Amaji Mankser[?] who used to be always here is back here again. I have sent one of my servant, Hanga, to remind him of the previous favours to him. I am hoping that he will be able to deliver the parvanah of Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan to Maharajah Ram Narayan Bahadur asking him not to support Khvajah Muhammdi Khan and not to interfere in the affairs of Malda. -- Another, contemporary translationof the contents is CC2/6, item no. 214.

Letter from Shitab Rai,

Congratulation on your appointment as the head of Calcutta Council. Previously I had sent a letter along with a reply of Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik to your letter through Mr Amyatt/Amhurst Sahib. I am concerned that I have not received a reply as yet. Now I have received another letter, dated 14th Dhu al-Hijjah, from the capital in which Daler Singh Bahadur has reminded that he has, on the assurances given to him by me, strengthened the friendship/ sar-rishtah-yi bandagi at the courts of Asamanjah and Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik. Therefore, when the request of the French Officer Monsieur Bhonse/ Thonse arrived at the court through the sons of the late Asafjah he did not reply. Now Rajah Sahib has strongly reminded me that you should send your reply, along with the letters of Rajah Thakur Mall Bahadur, as soon as possible. I have already written to you that Raja Ram Prashad and business agent/gumashtah of Jagat Seth were very annoyed when they did not receive replies to their letters promptly. -- Enclosure 1: It has been reported from the capital that after the arrival of the Marhatta army Ahmad Shah Abdali went back to Kabul and died there. Now Vazir al-Mumalik has changed his mind and has diverted his attention towards Bengal. He is waiting for the Prince [Ali Gauhar] to start some mischief. -- Enclosure 2: Please convey my salam to Mr Watts.

Letter from Sheo Bhat,$f1758, May 29 /$cSheo Bhat.

I had gone to pay my respect to Sri Sahib and from there I came to Pir Bhum and after travelling continuously I reached Banglah Banaspore, Chaklah Bandar Balsar on 15 Ramadan. Here I came to know that the followers of Maharajah Modaji [Madhuji] Bhonsalah have entered Benares and are intending to march to Azimabad. At the same time Samaji Bhonsalah with his army and Bakhu Pandit will soon be entering Jhans[?] Garh and from there they will come to the city of Gang. As the case of four Lac and fifty thousand rupees owed by Masabih al-Din Muhammad Khan is not settled yet and he has escaped to Nagpore I am requesting you to help in this matter. -- On verso are details of the properties owned by Masabih al-Din together with their respective values so that the above amount can be realised by their sale, etc. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no.506

Letter from Sheo Bhat,

I have already sent you an account of my affairs. Now I am sending an account of affairs at Balsar port. I had planned to interview all employees in Gang district and ask them to give me details of accounts for the last three years and punish those who did not comply with this order. However, some of my unfaithful servants who were in league with Masabih al-Din Muhammad Khan came to know about this. On his instigation all these unfaithful characters, including Odepuri Gosain/ harkarah removed Bhagat Ram and Paras Ram from their posts and with the approval and help of Masabih al-Din Khan's assistant, Didar Ali they went to Lalbagh and established an entrenchment there and posted three persons as guards. However, they were surrounded by Fath Khan who informed me to send my faithful men from Balsar port to reach there. They have now established a camp nearby and will be able to overcome them soon.

Sheo Bhat.
